Evaluation Activity 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?

There are two characters which I think have many similarities as well as differences. I have used my protagonist character who is Lily from my film Satanic and compare my character withStevie from The Pact.

There are many similarities and differences between both of these protagonist characters, which I will highlight. Firstly, our idea came mostly from two films which were Paranormal Activity and The Pact, both films have a protagonist character which is similar to ours however, The Pact has a character called Stevie which looks exactly the same with our character Lily. This fitted in well with our idea and also the character we tried to create. The protagonist character in The Pact is very similar to our character such as: The protagonist character (Lily) in my production has a similar costume to (Stevie) in The Pact as they are both covered in white, pale make up and wearing casual clothing which helps the audience and us to use in our film. This gives us an idea of how a typical character in a horror film should be. The reason why we thought it would be good if she dressed this way is because the character needs to give the kind of look that a typical protagonist character should which links with Stevie. The make-up that was used is the same as Stevie which is pale, white with eyes standing out and the hair was different but I think the red hair Lily has created more of a character and suspense for us and the audience. Another similarity that both characters have is they get introduced to the audience as mysterious characters because of their actions. What I mean by this is that both characters are introduced in an unusual way by saying Okay, its recording. In our production, Lily is pressing the record button and walks over to her place which is front of the Ouija Board. Straight away it starts off by both characters talking about what they are doing and

the protagonist is very eager to take part in this. The final production shows that this is a recording of their own experience which questions the audience on who are they? Why are they doing this? Another similarity that both characters have is that their roles stand out and are shown clearly to the audience throughout the film. The audience can point out straight away that the character (Lily)is the protagonist and what is going on by the first line pointed out. In the beginning, when the protagonist is introduced in the film she is the one that is really interested in playing the game which shows she is the main target for the antagonist, that is the spirit. Also the protagonist is seen to be very forceful at the beginning. This leaves Lily in a vulnerable position and quite exposed. Satanic and The Pact are both 90 minutes long and in Paranormal Activity both characters are seen to be at a young age which shows they are vulnerable and dont know how to make clear, clean decisions. Most youngsters bring the attention to themselves just like Lily by playing the game with her own decision. In most Horrors, the protagonist causes all the attention and regrets it after. For example; in Paranormal Activity when Katie is in the bathroom with her sister and says Bloody Mary three times she gets possessed in the dark which links with Satanic and Lily also gets possessed in the dark.

Differences The differences between Lily and Stevie in The Pact, is there age difference and also they both have different hair colours. They can both be seen to be effective as Lily has red hair and can represent the devil however; Stevie has long black hair which most protagonists in horror films have. In addition, Stevie repeats the name Judas to add an effect on the horror film and Judas is known as an evil character within Christianity which could have been effective if Lily had something similar to repeat. But what Lily did say its only a game isnt it? which was our slogan and to make an effect on the audience. Also, the costume that Katie wears is a night suit but Lily wears casual clothing which I think the audience prefers in a good and realistic film that doesnt follow the usual horror convention.
