EVALUATION QUESTION 2

How does your media product represent particular

social groups?
CHARACTERS
In my film the only social group that we are representing is teenagers. Teenagers
have connotations of being: wild, messy, selfish and moody. These connotations are
changing overtime however as the traditional ideology is everchanging with society.
In 2017 tradition gender roles are becoming more and more none existent and
because of this we havent included the stereotype of girls being weak and boys
being strong in our film.
However, as film was inspired by classic teen horror movies where each character
had a different personality and quirky trait. My individual research into different
horror movies and theories from people such as Carol Clover and Vladimir Propp
show that in every horror movie they have the same characters such as the smart
kid or the popular girl. We wanted to recreate this in our film by having 5
characters with extremely different personalities.
The parents are absent in this film, leaving Riley alone in the new house. This could
be representing them as irresponsible and careless.
THE CHARACTERS

Riley King Eli Harris Jace Hays Mackenzie Lloyd Malia Myers
REPRESENTATIONS THROUGH COSTUMES
We chose to keep the characterslooks simple as to represent them as normal teenagers. For Riley;
she wears skinny jeans and a crop top. This is a popular fashion trend among teenagers today and
it has connotations of the popular 'girly girl' which we planned Riley to be.
The next character Malia, is set to wear mostlythe same outfit as Riley and Malia are in the same
social group and socialclass. We chose forMalia to wear a denim jacket as this is a popular fashion
trend and again implies that she is classed under the 'popular' social group. The fact that they are
wearing mostly the same clothes is reinforcing that they have similar attitudes and are best friends.
The last girl in the film is Mackenzie, Mackenzie wears a simple top and a cardigan, this fits into the
shy' stereotype however her outfit still makes it look like she could fit in with Riley and Malia.
Both boys are featured in simple clothing, both wearing black and white which could portray their
'black and white' (simple attitude) to the Ouija board. Jace is wearing brands like Adidas and Nike,
these brands are quite popular however they resemble either a 'chav' look or a sporty type. Any of
these connotations can be used to describe Jace. Eli is wearing simply jeans, a t-shirt and a jacket,
this is to resemble that in the character profiles I described him asa 'simple guy'. We intended for
Eli to be nerdy introvert type, the fact that he wears glasses is helpful in this.
Each of the characters has a stereotype, we do not subvert any stereotypes in this film.
REPRESENTATION THROUGH CAMERA
ANGLES

Through out the Ouija board scene we incorporate

slight high angles of all the characters to establish
that they are powerless in this situation and this is
out of their control. As high angles have connotations
of looking down on people essentially disagreeing
with what they are doing.

Two shots and group shots are used to show how close
the friends are. The friends are constantly together and
this gives the impression of unity from the group.
Although this friendship gets overbearing when Jace
starts to peer pressure Eli into playing the board.
REPRESENTATION THROUGH CAMERA
ANGLES - 2

We have tried to incorporate the characters personalities in this scene when it

shows Mackenzie sat on the sofa on her own, with the rest of the group being sat
on the same sofa at the other side of the room, this reinforces her shy attitude.
REPRESENTATIONS THROUGH LIGHTING
We did not plan to represent any of the main 5 characters through lighting as they
are being portrayed as regular teenagers. However, we have represented the evil
entity through lighting. This is because in the Ouija board scene when the demon is
being summoned the lights are dimmed, this is to represent the evil in the room.
The first time that the demon is seen the lights switch immediately off, this portrays
that darkness has taken over (evil has taken over).

We can see the film getting continuously darker in the Ouija

scene
REPRESENTATION THROUGH SOUND

We did not have a specific soundtrack for each character, the only music
involved was music that should evoke a feeling of horror from the audience.
This music is used from start to finish but most importantly in the Ouija board
scene as this is the part which should be most terrifying. I feel that the only
character represented by music is the evil entity as the eerie music
continuously gets louder as the scene progresses.
