Poster Analysis

Alex Berry

Purpose
The purpose of this poster is to inform audience of a new
film and advertise it. The main image is of actress and
model Anna Faris. She plays a playboy model in the film.
The poster will attract target audience of young teenagers.
Girls will like the pink and girly style of the poster but it is
cleverly made so that boys will appreciate it also, due to
the emphasis on the model. This poster has another
purpose of being a display. Both girls and boys in their
early teens could have this as a room decoration.
Colour Association and purpose
Shelley (Anna Faris), is wearing a pink outfit, surrounded
by her belongings in pink playboy suitcases. Pink connotes
the feelings of love, friendship. This is to resemble the
romance between certain characters in the film, her own
charismatic portrayal and the love found from new
friendships. The pink also helps summarise the character,
Shelley, being bubbly, sweet and girly. This pink colour
contrasts well with the blue house behind. Blue commonly
stands for trust, loyalty, tranquillity and healing. This is
used because of the new friends she makes after being
kicked out of the playboy mansion help Shelley find true
happiness. The friends peering out of the door are in very
neutral colours, this is representing their personalities of
being very simple and to begin with quite dull. The neutral
colours in and around the house also represent their
lifestyles in contrast with Shelleys bright wild colours.
Background
The background of this poster is dull and unglamorous,
contrasting with how she looks. It represents the life that
she is moving in to. The new friends she lives with are
peering from inside the door looking astonished by
Shelleys glamorous and outgoing look. The whole
background works well as looking as shabby as possible
to emphasise the way Shelley looks.

Key image
The key image of this poster is of protagonist Shelley. She
stands in a provocative pink outfit, with bleach blonde
curled hair, bunny ears and heels. She is also posing in a
look at me confident way. This shows that the film will be
about her and a change in her life. The change in life is
represented in the cluster of suitcases around her.

Realism
The photo is not animated at all. The outfit Shelley is
wearing is worn in the actual film and she stands outside a
sorority house. It is a very realistic photo which will relate to
audience because of the location being a sorority and many
of the target audience will be in college / university.
Text Colour & font
The font of the tent is stereotypically used in the greek
college style in America on sorority jumpers. This coincides
with the theme of the film as Shelley enrols into a sorority.
The text is mainly a bold eye catching pink to match the
theme. The pink represents friendship, love and ditzyness.
Surrounding this pink text is a white outline. The text is a
summary of the film; The pink is Shelley and the white
surroundings is her new home and environment. Her being
inside the house in a way.
Above the main part that says house bunny, is a white text
surrounded by pink in a different font style which looks more
like the playboy font style.
All of this font does not have the intention to stand out,

This
mainposter
image.has a very simple layout possibly to relate to the
mind of the protagonist and the film itself. The film is very
easy to follow so the poster is as well. The main image is
directly in the centre of the poster and everything around it
fits in well and in a simple style. The two posts supporting
the house help frame the picture nicely and the mat below
Shelley's feet and the blue door behind her help emphasise
her more as she contrasts with those colours well.
Target audience
The target audience of this poster will be teenagers. The
blue helps show that boys will enjoy the colour as well as
the pink for girls. The sorority house helps show the
target audience because it is a relatable sight for people
of that age.

Reaction
I believe that the film is much better than what the
poster is portraying. Something I would have changed
is that the film is very funny but there isnt enough
humour on the poster. Even if one of the characters
were pulling a face it would be more amusing and give
a sense of what the film is really about.
In my own personal opinion I would have put a photo
of her in the dress doing the Marilyn Monroe
imitation and pulling the face she did when she said
ahh its frikin hot!!!

Purpose
The purpose of this poster is to advertise the film
Titanic. The text is in a larger font than normal
because it is one of the main elements which will
bring in audience. Titanic was a real ship and real
disaster. True stories always attract audience . The
two stars names are more englarged than normal also
because Lionardo Di Caprio will attract many of the
female target audience.
Colour Association and purpose
The colour of the bottom of the boat is black. Black is
the strongest colour to represent death, disaster and
fear. The yellow line above it evokes the feeling of
danger, this is because it resembles tape which
cordons off anything which is dangerous is normal life.
The top of the boat is white, which is a vast contrast
with the black bottom. The white will represent the
safety and clarity of being on top. As we reach the
light blue sky it mixes with clouds and the white
clothes of the faded characters. This represents
heaven. So the black and white mean life and death.
The hair of both of the characters has been edited to
be slightly red, this represents the love and passion
between them.

Key image
The key image of this poster is of the three main
elements. The ship and lovers Jack and Rose. The ship
stands tall looking mainly dark and gives off that type of
daunting evil look it also resembles the jaws poster.
Where as Jack and Rose are positioned above it in a soft
embrace which gives away the romantic genre of the film.

Background
The background starts from a sky blue and works its way
up merging the main characters clothes into the clouds.
This represents heaven which gives away much of the
plot but is not blatant enough for people to realise if
they have not watched the film. It all merges flawlessly
to help create a beautiful background. The lighter
background contrasts with the dark ship, making it more
eye catching.

Realism
The overall poster is slightly surreal . This is because it needs
that element of surrealism to be a love story. Jack and Rose
being edited in as figures in the sky floating above the ship is
not a typical thing anyone would see in day to day life.

Layout
This layout isnt typical of
a romantic film because
more attention is put
onto an object as
apposed to the
characters The object
being the boat. The
layout style is very busy
with a lot going on. This
could represent the array
of things which go on in
the film and how
everything surrounds
them they still stay

Text Colour & font

The white Title font is the boldest of all. It is white in
order to contrast with the jet black ship under belly
behind it. The writing style is formal and is the same as
the font on the actual boat. This is a very serious style to
represent the serious aspects of the film. The other
writing underneath is smaller in a gold yellow style to fit
in with the colour scheme as the ship has a golden streak
on it.
The colours are typical of the romantic genre. Red is
shown in the editing of the characters, they glow a pink
and red colour, there is also white, blue and gold on the
poster, all of which fit the genre.
The tagline Nothing on Earth can come between them
is put on the ship which is almost in-between them.
Target audience
The target audience of
this poster is Women
aged from 16+. This
poster attracts the
audience because it is
exciting and different
compared to normal
romantic films.

Reaction
I believe that the poster summarises the
film well although it is very daunting, the
poster has the romantic and warm feeling
to it due to the way Jack and Rose are
portrayed. The ship makes for a great
feeling of being overwhelmed, as it swarms
most of the page.

Purpose
The purpose of this poster is to advertise the film Stardust.
This film is an adventure and love story for families. The
poster shows the two main characters in the centre of the
poster, surrounded by supporting actors and actresses. I like
the fact that the films title would leave much room to have a
poster filled with stars etc. But it is kept minimal in terms of
stars.

Key image
The key images on this poster are of the
male and female protagonists centered
directly in the middle. Their faces are
serious in order to represent the journey
they will go on and their love for one
another. The Man stands in front of the
girl in a protective position, this is
because he takes it upon himself out of
love to protect this girl, who is wanted

Colour Association and purpose

The poster is surrounded with a dark blue, purple and black array of
night sky colours. This helps make it seem much more deep and
meaningful. It is also quite dark, the outside colours dont give off a
friendly warm glow like the middle. The dark colours will represent
the evil, envy and passion towards the main character (as she is a
wanted star). Lightening stripes sore through these dark colours to
help emphasise the danger, evil and darkness surrounding the
main characters.
The centre glows a warm orange and white colour, with the female
protagonists hair shimmering in the light to help represent her
being the cause of the light. She is the source. Clouds hover lightly
below their feet in order to represent them being higher than
clouds stars.
Overall the colour representation is good. Two main colours of dark
and light representing good and evil, contrast well with each other
to help make the poster eye catching to audience. The warm glow
around the male and female centred, represents the love they have
for one another and how when they are together, nothing can come
into that warm glow of a star.
Background
The background is very busy, playing a big part of the poster. It
contains head shots of vital characters. All of the characters look
very serious and its hard to deter which character is good, this is
great as the poster isnt giving too much away and people will want
to watch it to find out who they are. All the images are merged but
they are clearly all in different settings and places in the film on the
journey.

Realism
This is purposely a very surreal poster. This is
purposely done to coincide with the adventure fantasy
theme. All of the characters have mystical and magical
elements to them such as the girl star and the man in
the hat. The characters how ever are also portrayed to
look human like in every way in order for audience to
relate to them.
Layout
This is a typical layout for an action adventure and
fantasy film. The poster is bombarded with images of
people from the film/journey. The colours are formatted
like explosions of light and there is even lightening to
emphasise it more. Silhouettes of scenes fill the backdrop
to jam pack the poster. Everything is in its typical place
and the text fills only the top and bottom of the poster to
leave more room for imagery.

Reaction
The poster combines the good and evil throughout the
film by using colour to represent it. However I believe
that there is too much dark surrounding the poster, it is
supposed to represent evil and the nights sky but I think
more light from the centre could have crawled into
certain areas of such darkness in the corners.
Overall I believe the poster focuses on light to draw
audience attention and the props such as the sword help
show adventure and action. However I believe the
centred light colour could have been nicer and less

Text Colour & font

The shimmering gold font is put in a smart prominent
format, all in capitals to grab the eye of audience. A
simple ghost like curve hovers over the A, then reaches
the end of the title, this represents a shooting star which
is a nice touch being the only obvious star on the poster
even though the poster is entirely related to stars. The
writing is also reasonably large at the top, stating the
actors in the film. This is a great way to get target
audience attention because the actors are well known. If
they were less well known it wouldnt be needed. The tag
line is in its stereotypical place of under the title, it fits in
well and doesnt give much of the plot away.
Target audience
The target audience of this poster is ages 8+. It has
all the fantasy elements to entice all ages and
nothing is at all provocative or too scary or confusing
for a younger age group.

Purpose
The purpose of this poster is to advertise the film
Piranha. The reason I chose to analyse this poster is
because it is a prime example of a teenage thriller film
because it has sexual undertones of a specific type
which attracts a teenage audience. The purpose of the
poster is to catch target audiences eye by using
imagery and colours to represent the film well.
Colour Association and purpose
The poster has a very blue theme to it. But different
shades of blue are representing different things. The
blue skies above the water are very light, this
represents safety and haven. It gives the audience a
glimpse into the holiday lifestyle where everything is
lovely. As we look lower down the poster, the crystal
blue waters on the surface begin to become darker
and darker as we see under the surface. The blues
increasing darkness represents the level of safety and
danger. The darker the water the less safe, meaning
under the water it is dangerous. The black merging
into the dark blue is there to represent the evil and
death that lies beneath.
The title is in blood red and is placed above where the
black is in order for it to stand out even more. The
blood red initialises the idea of this film being a horror

Realism
This poster uses real life elements and elaborates on
them, such as the sea getting darker under water, the
poster makes it black. The piranhas have been
emphasised to be ghost like terrifying creatures and the
girl is made to be as perfect as possible. This works well
with target audience because there is relatability, it can
be seen as something real as apposed to fantasy.
Layout
The layout for this poster is typical for a teenage film and
thriller because it contains a relatable character, such as
the girl sunbathing and then slight glimpses of the villain in
darkness (in this case the fish). The tagline fills most of the
sea, this is because it is what will attract target audience.
The layout is very relaxed and chilled, but most importantly
it has a lot of space on it, which is what teenagers want
most at their age, so the freedom on the poster, even
though it is scary, relates to target audience.
Text Colour & font
The font resembles a Hawaiian holiday shack type of font
with a horror twist. I believe this fits in with the beach and
sun theme of the film and the blood red makes it clear it
is a horror. Another noticeable factor is there isnt as
much wording, this is because teenagers on average
dont like to read, so the titles will not interest them.

Reaction
The poster is a great prime example of a thiller which
teenagers would enjoy and find scary. The poster puts
the audience in a position they would dream to be in,
but then adds danger and fear to it underneath which
is exciting.

Target audience
The target audience of this poster is specifically for
teenagers. The tag line saying sea, sex, and blood
purposely is in bold to catch their eye as its things
they find most exciting at their age.
