Review of Math Terminologies

Addition (+)
• Add, Adding, Plus, Sum Of, Total, And, Credit, Put Together

Subtraction (-)
• Less, Take Away From, Difference, Minus, Subtract, Debit, What’s Left

Multiplication
• An asterisk (*)is the computer symbol for multiplication
• Multiply, Times, Find the Product
• Percentage and Taxes are also carried out through multiplication; e.g. 8.35%
of 136 is carried out as “0.0835 * 136”.

Division
• A backslash (/) is the computer symbol for division.
• Divide, average, find the Quotient

Order of Operations
The order of operations for complicated calculations is as follows:

1. Perform operations within parentheses.


2. Multiply and divide, whichever comes first, from left to right.
3. Add and subtract, whichever comes first, from left to right.

Example 1:

1 + 20 × (6 + 2) ÷ 2 =

Example 2:

4 + 3 – 5 * 4 / (3 + 2) =

1. 2 + 5 * 9 + 5 * 2 – 5 2. 5 * 3 * 2 + 2 * 5 + 3 * 2

3. 6 + 2 + 3 – 5 + 6 4. 6 + 2 * 3 – 5 * 2

5. 4 + 9 + (8 + 2) * (4 – 2) 6. 5 + 5 + (6 + 2 * 3 / 2) – 12
