The Study Area

The study area is located in the outer Bay of Fundy in the St.
Croix River Estuary between St. Stephen, NB/Calais, ME and
St. Andrews, NB/Robbinston, ME as shown in Figure 1.

The St. Croix Estuary is a typical estuary where marine influ-

ences become more pronounced as one proceeds downstream.
The study area has both freshwater and marine affinities.
St. Croix River
The river bottom has been subjected to serious industrial pol-
Estuary
lution and was anaerobic and virtually dead during the sixties.
While the river is not fully recovered, some hardy colonizers
now occur in the upper study area, including sand shrimp
(Crangon septemspinosus), green crabs (Carcinus spp.), an-
nelid worms, seaweeds and some molluscs. The once large Passamaquoddy Bay
runs of anadromous fishes are virtually gone. The recovery has Bay of Fundy
a long way to go and the river is still influenced by chronic pollu-
tion from industrial releases and domestic sewage leakages.

The study area is primarily influenced by domestic sewage leak-

ages from the Town of St. Stephen and industrial pollution from
plants located upstream. Sampling along the Calais waterfront
did not find high bacterial levels during the 2002-2003 study. Figure 1 The Study Area in the St. Croix Estuary with locator
Other small sources of pollution occur throughout the estuary. map.

being discharged through storm drains.
These annual monitoring reports have been the foundation of
presentations to municipalities and individuals that have re-
sulted in some serious pollution sources being eliminated and
potentially serious pollution problems being averted. Data col-
lected during 2008 will be used to launch additional remediation
efforts in the study area with particular emphasis on the St.
Stephen and St. Andrews waterfronts.

Materials and Methods
A field team was deployed to collect water quality data, bacterial covered plates, the samples were left to solidify for 45 minutes
samples, photographs, GPS points, and to conduct biota to an hour. They were then placed in an incubator for 24 to 48
surveys at preselected sampling sites in the estuary. hours at 35.5°C.

Sampling and Sample Sites The bacteria colonies were counted and recorded for 3 mL of
water. The number was then divided by 3 and multiplied by 100

etc.) entering the St. Croix Estuary within the study area were (CFU) per 100 mL of water. The CFU/100 mL of water is the

4. Biota was surveyed and recorded for the intertidal area from
high to low water.

b) No serious problems identified but of potential
concern - eye symbol/yellow
c) Site of concern, potentially hazardous - skull and
crossbones/red

Coliscan Baterial Analysis

The Coliscan Easygel method was used to determine the E. coli

and total coliform counts for the water samples. This method
was chosen due to its simplicity and straight forward sampling
technique and incubation period. The samples were taken with
a 3 mL sterile pipette and placed directly into the liquid medium.
The samples were put on ice until ready to plate. Once in the Field staff collecting samples in 2008.
