INTRODUCTION
à In general, rules which are set for the two
transmission networks are called as ´Protocolsµ

à The Open Systems Interconnections(OSI) model

was developed by the Internationals
Organizations for Standardizations(ISO) in 1984.

à Transmission Control Protocol(TCP)/Internet

Protocol(IP) was developed in 1970·s and 1980·s
by the US Department of Defense on ARPANET
project.
OSI MODEL
à It is an abstract Model of how the equipment and
network protocols should communicate and
cooperate for effective data transmission.

à The OSI model is a layered framework. It divides

the entire data communication in small tasks or
sub-tasks, known as layers

à There are 7 layers in the OSI stack, divided into

2 groups Upper layers and Lower layers.

à It is an abbreviation for Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol.

à It is routable protocol which can be used on

WAN·s for connecting different types of systems
such as UNIX and MS Windows.
