NON-NATIVE SPECIES AND ITS EFFECT

1. An example of one (1) non-native species in the Caribbean is Papaya mealy bug.

2. Non-native species are more successful than native species because they impose pressure
on the native species. Additionally, there is no specialised natural predator and parasite in
that new habitat, thus allow rapid proliferation.

3. Impact on the ecosystem as a result of non-invasive includes:-

• Non-invasive can lead to species hybridization and the extinction of native

species.

• The transmission of infections and diseases.

• Erosion of the ecosystem through competition and predation of native species.

E.g. disruption of food webs.

4. Natural selection is the genetic changes that occur in a population as it adapt over time to
its environment without the interference of humans.

• As a result of natural selection, some individuals within a population survive and

reproduce successfully. These offspring are better adapted to suit the existing
niche where they become specialized in that particular ecological niche.
• Over time natural selection allow changes to physical structure such as shape, size
and wings. These modifications allow the survival of organism. E.g. these
features may aid in efficient food search.
