 Drawbacks of older versions of PCI

 Features of 3GIO

 3GIO Topology

 3GIO Architecture

 Comparison with older versions

Drawbacks of older versions of PCI bus

• Cannot be easily scaled up in freq and scaled

down in voltage

• Synchronously clocked data transfer is signal

skew limited

• Signal routing rules are at the limit for cost-

effective FR4 technology
FEATURES:

•Doubles or quadruples PCI-X bandwidth

•full hardware and software compatibility with previous

generations of PCI

•uses same form factor, pin-outs, connector, bus widths,

protocols

•enables 10GB Ethernet, 10GB fibre channel, infiniband

architecture, and other I/O technologies

•32 times higher performance than 1st generation PCI

3GIO Topology

•It consists of host bridge, a

switch, and several I/O device
endpoints

•switch provides ppp or p2p

communication

•connections can be constructed

with connectors or cables,
allowing mobile docking and new
methods of system partitioning
3GIO Layered Architecture
Physical Layer:

•2 differentially driven pairs of signals

•data clock embedded using 8/10b encoding scheme

•initial freq : 2.5gbps per direction

•Transmits packets

•b/w of a link can be scaled

•no OS s/w is involved in initialisation

•future enhancements would only affect the physical

layer
Data Link Layer:

•ensures reliable delivery of packets

•responsible for data integrity

•adds sequence no. & CRC to

transaction layer packets

•credit based flow control protocol

Transaction Layer:

• Receives request packets & creates response packets

• Supports 4 address spaces:

3 PCI address spaces : memory, I/O, configuration
adds message space

• uses MSI method for interrupt

Software Layer:

• 2 facets of s/w compatibility: initialization, runtime

• Initialization model: OS discovers add-in h/w and creates n

optimal system environment

• run-time s/w model: load-store model
