1. A strut AB attached to the face of a vertical wall at A by a spherical hinge stands


perpendicular to the wall and is supported by two guy wires, as shown in figure 1.
At B, in a plane parallel to the wall, two forces P and Q acts as shown, Q being
horizontal and P vertical. Find the axial forces produced in the members if P =
500 N and Q = 1000 N. [16]

2. (a) Define the following:
i. Friction

iii. Limiting friction

(b) A ladder 5 m long and of 250 N weight is placed against a vertical wall in a
position where its inclination to the vertical is 300 . A man weighing 800 N
climbs the ladder. At what position will he induce slipping? The co-efficient
of friction for both the contact surfaces of the ladder viz. with the wall and
the floor is 0.2. [8+8]

3. (a) Derive an expression for ratio of tensions of a belt in standard form


(b) The centre of two pulleys of diameter 120 mm and 240 mm are 300 mm apart.
They are connected by an open belt. If the coefficient of friction for the larger
pulley be 0.28, what would be its value for the smaller pulleys simultaneously?

4. (a) Determine the product of inertia of a quadrat circle.

(b) Find the moment of inertia about both the centroidal axes of shaded portion
in the Figure 4b. [6+10]

5. A rectangular parallelopiped has the following dimensions.
Length along x-axis = ‘l′
Height along y-axis = ‘a’
Breadth along z-axis = ‘b’
Density of the material is ‘w’
Determine the mass moment of inertia of the parallelopiped about the centroidal
axes. [16]

6. (a) A particle moves along straight line. Its motion in represented by the equation
S = 16t + 4t2 − 3t3 where S is in metres and t in seconds. Determine
i. displacement, velocity and acceleration 2 seconds after start.
ii. displacement and acceleration when velocity is zero and
iii. displacement and acceleration when acceleration is zero.
(b) A projectile is aimed at a target on the horizontal plane and falls 12m short
when the angle of projection is 150 while it overshoots by 24m when the angle
is 450 . Find the angle of projection to hit the target. [8+8]

7. (a) A homogeneous solid cylinder of weight 100 N whose axis is horizontal rotates
about its axis, in frictionless bearings under the action of the weight of a 10N
block which is carried by a rope wrapped around the cylinder. What will be
angular velocity of cylinder two seconds after the motion starts? Assume the
diameter of cylinder as 100cm.
(b) A block of mass 5Kg resting on a 300 inclined plane is released. The block after
travelling a distance of 0.5m along the inclined plane hits a spring of stiffness
15N/cm. Find the maximum compression of spring. Assume coefficient of
friction between the block and the inclined plane is 0.2. As shown in the
Figure 7. [8+8]

8. (a) Explain how a simple pendulum differ from a compound pendulum briefly
with the help of differential mathematical equations.
(b) Determine the stiffness in N/cm of a vertical spring to which a weight of
50 N is attached and is set vibrating vertically. The weight makes 4 oscillations
per second. [8+8]

1. Calculate the magnitude of the force supported by the pin at B for the bell crank
loaded and supported as shown in the figure 1. [16]

2. (a) Explain the types of friction with examples.
(b) Two equal bodies A and B of weight ‘W’ each are placed on a rough inclined
plane. The bodies are connected by a light string. If µA = 1/2 and µB = 1/3,
show that the bodies will be both on the point of motion when the plane is
inclined at tan−1 (5/12). [6+10]

3. Power transmitted between two shafts 3.5 m apart by a crossed belt drive round
two pulley, 600 mm and 300 mm in diameters is 6KW. The speed of the langer
pulley is 220 r.p.m. The permissible load on the belt is 25 N/mm width of the belt
which is 5 mm thick. The coefficient of friction between the smaller pulley surface
and the belt is 0.35.
Determine:

(a) Necessary length of the belt


(b) The width of the belt, and
(c) The necessary initial tension in the belt. [16]

4. (a) Deduce an expression from first principle to determine the center of gravity of
a sight circular solid cone about its base.

(b) Locate the centroid of the shaded area as shown in figure4b. [8+8]

5. Derive the expression for the moment of inertia of a cylinder length ‘l′ , radius ‘r’ and
density ‘w’ about longitudinal centroidal axis and about the centroidal transverse
axis. [16]

6. A ladder AB of 3m length remains in contact with the vertical wall and horizontal
floor and the angle of inclination of the ladder with horizontal is 600 . The ladder
moves such that its ends remain in contact with the vertical wall at B and horizontal
floor at A. If the end A moves with a linear velocity of 0.1m/s, find the velocity
of its upper end B. If the linear acceleration of the end A is 0.05m/s2 , find the
acceleration of the end B and the resultant acceleration of the ladder AB. [16]

8. The weight of an empty railway wagon is 240 KN on loading it with goods weighing
320KN, its springs get compressed by 80mm.

ii. loaded as above.

(b) It is set into natural vibrations with amplitude of 100mm,when empty. Cal-
culate the velocity when its displacement is 40mm from statical equilibrium

1. (a) Define free body diagram, Transmissibility of a force and resultant of a force.
(b) Two identical rollers, each of weight 100 N, are supported by an inclined plane
and a vertical wall as shown in Figure1b. Assuming smooth surfaces, find the
reactions induced at the points of support A, B and C. [6+10]

3. (a) Obtain the conditions for the maximum power transmitted by a belt from one
pulley to another.
(b) A shaft running at 100 r.p.m drives another shaft at 200 r.p.m and transmits
12 kW. The belt is 100 mm wide and 12 mm thick and µ = 0.25. The distance
between the shafts is 2.5 meters and the diameter of the smaller pulley is 500
mm.
Calculate the stress in
i. An open belt
ii. A crossed belt, connecting the two pulleys. [6+10]

4. (a) Determine the product of inertia of a quadrat circle.

5. A cylinder of diameter 500 mm and height 1200 mm has mass density of 8000
kg/m3 . Find out the mass moment of inertia of the cylinder

(a) with respect to the axis of the cylinder and


(b) about a line which coincides with an end face of the cylinder and passing
through the centre of this face. [16]

6. (a) A small grinding wheel is attached to the shaft of an electric motor which has
a rated speed of 3000r.p.m . When the power is turned on, the unit reaches
its rated speed in 5secs and when the power is turned off, the unit comes to
rest in 60secs. Assuming the acceleration to be uniform, find the number of
revolutions that the motor executes
i. in reaching its rated speed and
ii. to come to rest.
(b) A cord is wrapped around a wheel which is initially at rest as shown in
(figure6(b)ii)
Force is applied to the cord and is gives an acceleration a=6t m/s2 where t is
in seconds. Determine
i. The angular velocities of the wheel
ii. The angular position of radial line OP as a function of time. [8+8]

7. (a) A homogeneous sphere of radius of a=100 mm and weight W=100 N can
rotate freely about a diameter. If it starts from rest and gains, with constant
angular acceleration, an angular speed n=180rpm, in 12 revolutions, find the
acting moment.
(b) A block starts from rest from‘A’. If the coefficient of friction between all sur-
faces of contact is 0.3, find the distance at which the block stop on the hori-
zontal plane. Assume the magnitude of velocity at the end of slope is same as
that at the beginning of the horizontal plane.
As shown in the Figure7b. [8+8]

8. Determine the frequency of torsional vibrations of the disc shown in figure 8 if both
the ends of the shaft are fixed and diameter of the shaft is 40mm. The disc has a
mass of 600Kg, and a radius of gyration of 0.4m.Taking modulus of rigidity for the
shaft material as 85GN/m2 .l1 =1m, and l2 = 0.8m. [16]

1. (a) State and prove Lame’s theorem.


(b) A prismatic bar AB of 7m long is hinged at A and supported at B as shown
in Figure 1b. Neglecting friction, determine the reaction Rb produced at B
owing to the weight of the bar. Q = 4000 N, Take α = 250. [6+10]

3. A cross belt drive is to transmit 7.5 KW at 1000 r.p.m of the smaller pulley.
The diameter of the smallest pulley is 250mm and velocity ratio is 2. The centre
distance between the pulley is 1250mm. A flat belt of thickness 6 mm and of
coefficient friction 0.3 is used over the pulleys. Determine the necessary width of
the belt if the maximum allowable stress in the belt is 1.75N/mm2 and density of
the belt is 1000Kg/m3 . [16]

4. (a) Deduce an expression from first principle to determine the center of gravity of

5. (a) Prove that the mass moment of inertia of a right circular cone of base radius
‘R’ and height ‘h’, with respect to a diameter of the base is M (3R2 + 2h2 )/20
where M is the mass of the cone.
(b) Calculate the mass moment of inertia of a circular cone of base radius 300 mm
and height 600 mm about a line which passes through the mass centre of the
cone and which is parallel to the base of the cone. The mass density of the
cone is 2500 kg/m3 . [8+8]
6. (a) A train is traveling at a speed of 60 km/hr. It has to slow down due to certain
repair work on the track. Hence, it moves with a constant retardation of 1
km/hrper second until its speed is reduced to 15 km/hr. It then travels at
a constant speed of for 0.25 km/hr and accelerates at 0.5 km/hr per second
until its speed once more reaches 60 km/hr. Find the delay caused.
(b) The motion of a particle in rectilinear motion is defined by the relation
s = 2t3 − 9t2 + 12t − 10 where s is expressed in metres and t in seconds. Find
i. the acceleration of the particle when the velocity is zero
ii. the position and the total distance traveled when the acceleration is zero.

7. If Wa :Wb :Wc is in the ratio of 3:2:1 , find the accelerations of the blocks A, B, and
C. Assume that the pulleys are weightless. {As shown in the Figure7}. [16]

8. A small ball of weight ‘W’ is attached to the middle of a tightly stretched perfectly
flexible wire AB of length 2l, connected between two horizontal rigid surfaces.

(arrangement is vertical). Prove that for small lateral displacements and high initial
tension in the wire, the ball will have a simple harmonic motion, and calculate the
