What is technology?

Discuss whether or not each object is an example of

technology. Write your reasons for each decision.
On what basis did you decide whether an object was an
example of technology? What is your definition of the term
technology?
The goal of technology is to improve the way people live.
What is technology?
• Technology is how people change the world around them to
meet their needs and solve practical problems.
• Technology includes things people make, such as computers.
It also consists of the knowledge needed to design those
products.
• Finally, technology includes the processes, such as
manufacturing and transportation, that get products to the
people who use them.
The products of technology can be classified into several
major areas:
How Does Science Relate to Technology?
• Science and technology are related,
but they are not the same thing.
• Science is the study of the natural
world to understand how it works.
• Technology changes, or modifies, the natural
world to meet human needs or solve problems.
• An engineer is a person who is trained to use both
technological and scientific knowledge to solve
practical problems.
Technology’s Impact on Society
• New technologies change how people live. In other
words, they change society. (Society refers to any
group of people who live together in an area and
have certain things in common, such as form of
government.)
• From the Stone Age thousands of years ago to the
Information Age today, technology has had a large
impact on society.
Technology’s Impact on Society
• Today, cities have grown greatly. But they are no longer
isolated. The technology of the Information Age has
changed societies around the world. Cellular phones,
satellites, and super-fast computers allow people to share
information quickly.
