MODULE 7

WHEN TECHNOLOGY AND HUMANITY CROSS

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. Identify the different technological advancement in the society
2. Discuss the development of science and technology in the country

Overview

Our world is entering a profoundly revolutionary time of transition. Many of us would be shocked
at the size and speed of innovations we simply hadn’t anticipated. These exponential advances in
technology offer tremendous potential, and tremendous new responsibilities come with those opportunities.
In modern times, there are different technological advancements in all forms and sizes may it be
inside the home, the office, the learning place, or simply on the streets. It is now really available across the
world to almost everyone. It is not completely impossible to say that every person in the world have at least
one technological device. In addition, technology is not limited to costly and high-end products. Simple
types of machines which can perform specific tasks on a regular basis may now be considered as a form of
technology. However, despite its usefulness and beneficial characteristics, the numerous technological
advances still confront some problems. To be more specific, these issues are of an ethical nature, affecting
not just the machine but also humanity. Innovation and civilization cannot cross paths anymore, and as
others would say, innovation has become a need for humans. At the end of the day, ethics in the area of
technology should still be applied to ensure the health and morals of such tools for individuals.

ACTIVITY 7

1. Battle of the Brain: Discuss the different ethical dilemmas faced by technological advancements
in the society through a philosophical discussion. Do this by forming two groups. Your instructor
will serve as the facilitator of the debate. The first group will be supporting side and the other
group will be the opposing side. The facilitator should present a paper detailing the topic without
choosing any side. Each side will be given 3minutes to discuss their point and answer the
questions or rebutting the other side’s arguments.

THINK ABOUT THESE QUESTIONS

1. Do people really need technology in their lives? Is it really a necessity?

2. How do you reconcile the “need” for technology and the dilemma/s it faces?

3. Should there be an ethics of technology?
