|| Sri HayagrivAvathAram ||
This incarnation was taken by Sriman NaarAyaNA to preserve and protect Vedams,
Jn~Anam, Vaak and AachAram. As one of the Vyuha MUrthis, Aniruddhavathara
NaarAyaNan created Brahma, taught BrahmA VedAs and assigned him duties of creation.
Two asurAs by the name of Madhu and Kaitabhan stole the VedAs, when BrahmA was not
alert. After losing the VedAs Brahma was like a man, who had lost his eyes and cried out to
his father, Sriamn NaarAyaNA to help him regain the VedAs. Without the vedAs, BrahmA
was totally incapacitatd from doing his assigned duties. Sri HayagrIvan responded to His son's
appeals and punished the two asurAs and recovered the stolen VedAs and gave it back to His
son, BrahmA. Sri HayagrIvan instructed BrahmA further with Pravrutthi, Nivrutthi
dharmams and ParamaikAnthi dharmam as the unique way to perform AarAdhanam for Him
to receive His blessings of Jn~Ana, Bhakthi and AnushtAnam to prepare one to perform
prapatthi to Him. He also revealed that Havya -Kavya Dharmams are used mainly to worship
Him.
The SubhAsrayam of Sri Lakshmi HayagrIvan

Sri MahA Laksmi becomes Sri HayagrIvan's sahadharma chAriNI with the name of Vidhyai in
this avathAram. She is also known as Vaak Devi, since the Lords' other name is VaagIsan.
With Her mother-in-law's blessings , the wife of BrahmA -the daughter-in-law- got the name
of Sarasvathi , Vaag Devi and Bharathi.
In His four arms, Sri HayagrIvan holds Sudarsanam , Sankham , a Book and Jn~Ana Mudrai.
The disc and the conch remind us that He is an avathAram of Sriman NaarAyaNA. The book
and the Jn~Ana mudrai reminds us that He confers on the worshippers divya Jn~Anam and
the power of divine speech and pravachana sakthi associated with our AchAryAs. It was Sri
HayagrIvan's paripUrNa anugraham that elevated Swami Desikan to the level of a kavi-
ThArkika Simham.
The Yoga HayagrIvan received by Swami Desikan directly from Garuda BhagavAn is at
Swami Desikan sannadhi at ThiruvahIndhrapuram. The other Moortham of Sri Lakshmi
HayagrIvan worshipped by Sarasvathi and given by Her to AchArya RaamAnujA at Kashmir.
That One is the ArAdhana mUrthy now at Para Kaala matam. That mUrtham was given to
Brahma Tantra Svathanthra Swami by Swami Desikan himself. The peetathipathis of Para
Kaala Matam have constructed many granthams to explain the greatnes of this avathAram of
the Lord.
There are the following Source material on this avathAram extolling the greatness of this
avathAram:
** Sri Lakshmi HayagrIva Sahasra Naamam (Brahma Composed it and taught his son,
Kasyapa prajApathi)
** Sri HayagrIvOpanishad , the recitation of which lead to Parama Sivan being revered as
DakshINA mUrthy.
** Swami Desikan's HayagrIva SthOthram modelled after Sri VishNu Tilakm section found in
PaancharAthra Aagamam. Sri PaancharAthram states clearly that Sri HayagrIva manthram is
manthra Raajam (King among ManthrAs) and there is nothing that can not be achieved by the
japam of this manthram received from a qualified AchAryA (anEna manthrarAjEna
naasAdhyam VidhyathE Bhuvi). Sri HayagrIva manthram is embedded inside the Sri
HayagrIva sthuthi of Swami Desikan and any one, who recites this sthuthi with reverence will
have the benefit of performing Sri HayagrIva manthra japam.
All of thse Source granthams on BhagavAn HayagrIvan instruct us that He is "the Veda
Vedaantha SaasthrArtha tattva vyAkhyAna tathparan". He is the essence of the mahaA
Vaakhayams of the Four Vedams:
Sri HayagrIvan instructed BrahmA on the rahasyaarthams of these MahA Vaakhyams ,when
BrahmA eulogized Him as " Veda karthA Veda BharthA vedAharthAvidhAm vara:,
pungAnupunga hEshAtya: PoorNa shAtguNya Vigraha:. At the end of regainig the lost
VedAs, BrahmA eulogized BhagavAn HayagrIvan in moving way :
Thirumangai's paasuram refers to him seeing a Hamsa Dampathis in the fertile delta waters of
ThErazhundhUr. He recognizes them as Lakshmi HayagrIvan based on the fact that Hamsa
sabdham has the meaning of a Horse according to Medhini Kosam. Sri HayagrIvan has the
Horse's head and the body of a human. AzhwAr's mind takes him back to the times, when
Parimuka ( Haya Vadhana ) PerumAn helped with the restoration of the VedAs lost by
BrahmA :
AzhwAr describes the scene soon after BrahmA lost the VedAs. The seven universes were
covered with darkness. The sages as well as the asurAs were confounded. At that time Sri
HayagrIvan appeared and restored the stolen vedAs to BrahmA and normalcy to the worlds.
It is interesting to note that the three Sahasra Naamams of HayagrIvan salute Him as
Vatapathra Saayee. The previous posting discussed in detail Thirumangai's vision of
TherazhundhUr EmperumAn as vatapathra Saayee. These three naamAvaLis realting to
Vatapatra Saayee HayagrIvan are:
The very first four of the sahasra naamams of Sri HayagrIvan connects to the Hamsa
dampathis ( Lakshmi hayagrIvan ) that inspired Thirumangai to compose this paasuram :
Sri HayagrIvan's body is known as Manthra mayam. All the Sahasra Naamams and
Asthotthara Naamams attest to this Tattvam. Swami Desikan acknowledged the manthra
Maya sarIram of BhagavAn HayagrIvan in the tenth slOkam of His hayagrIva SthOthram:

Gita – The Wisdom of Krishna
4. Arjuna could not comprehend any imperative for action in a phenomenal world – finite,
transient and bereft of any ultimate value. The entire network of mortal existence
unanchored to any larger and enduring reality, a fleeting ripple in an endless ocean of
subsistence and hence seemingly meaningless. Krishna‟s task, in this context, was to lift
Arjuna to a higher consciousness – „from out of the ignorant attachment to action and its
outcome, into a state transcending action, which at the same time originates and
harmonises (orders) action”. – An action, which is at once non-binding, liberating and
good for all, for the soul of man „must not turn back from work that has to be done‟.
Arjuna‟s mind-intellect complex has to be lifted out of his ego, born of ignorance and to
make it abide in the self or the Divine. Krishna explained to Arjuna that it is only through
discrimination (the true understanding of the distinction between the real and the unreal,
the true and the false) that a man rises in thought and action. Ignorance, the cause of all
evil, is non-discrimination. When we believe the unreal as the real, we suffer. It is this
understanding that is called intellectual interpretation (buddhi), as opposed to the mind
interpretation by Arjuna of his position.
5. Jnaana (knowledge) Defined: Gained Only by Upaasana or Self-effort:
The Aatman (dehi), the Body – Complex (deha) - Distinct and Different:
“All things change; nothing perishes”. – Ovid;
5. Arjuna stands stunned and staggered by the complexity of his own intellectual
predicament. In spite of his great and stupendous achievements, he now finds himself not
capable of handling satisfactorily his own faint-heartedness and consequent confusion –
emotional and intellectual. He is overwhelmed by his emotional imbalance. So Krishna
exhorts Arjuna to move on to a new realm or a new level of consciousness other than the
body-senses-mind-intellect complex and look at the problem from this new level at the
very outset of the teaching. Krishna explains: There are two categories in the
consciousness (of man) – the object of consciousness (the known) and the subject, the
knower (Aatman), who is conscious. The same entity cannot be the knower and the
known at once and at the same time. So the two are and ought to be distinct and
different. The known is the body –senses – mind – intellect – complex and the knower is
the indwelling spirit soul. Our sages after careful analysis had stated that an experience is
not possible without three fundamental factors of experience, namely, the experiencer,
the subject – who experiences, the object of experience, the experienced – what is
experienced, and the factor which connects the two, the process of experiencing. The
experiencer, the subject, gains experience of the world through the instrumentality of the
body with its senses of perception; through the mind it experiences various emotions;
through the intellect it experiences the ideas and the value systems that the intellect
attributes to the various experiences. When this subject identifies itself with the body it
becomes the perceiver, experiencing the objects of the world; when it identifies with the
mind, it becomes the feeler experiencing the world of emotions and feelings; and when it
identifies with the intellect it becomes the thinker experiencing the world of thoughts and
ideas and values. It is this way the subject works out its roles of a perceiver, feeler and
thinker in the process of seeking happiness in the world of objects, emotions, thoughts
and values. Thus this subject is the seer behind the eyes, the hearer behind the ears, a
smeller behind the nose, etc. So also it is the feeler behind the mind, a thinker behind the
intellect. The subject we are talking about is the spirit soul indwelling the body-mind
–intellect-complex. In fact, our life being nothing but our capacity to react through the
instruments of cognition, feeling and understanding, the spirit soul is nothing but the life-
principle in us acting through various equipments. The body – complex is the environment
in association with which the soul not only enjoys the fruits of work but also undergoes
spiritual evolution. The body – complex is its adjunct, the instrument, through which the
soul contacts objects external. Still the body – complex is only the object, because the
knower (the soul – the subject) who is aware of it (the body – complex) is no part of it but
is different and distinct from it. So the self is the subject of all experiences and is never
the experienced object and is different and distinct from the experienced. Also all qualities
that are experienced belong to the object experienced and never to the subject, the
experiencer. The self is of ever-blissful divine nature (sat – cit – aananda) and ever full
(poorn’ah). It is this understanding and realisation that is emphasised as knowledge. Lack
of this understanding and mistaking the soul to be the body-complex is ignorance termed
also as ego. The body is ever changing and ultimately perishes, but the indwelling spirit
soul is indestructible, all pervasive, immutable, eternal, immeasurable, the ancient, the
changeless and the unmanifest. It is not born nor does it die. – (2.11 – 30):
6. The soul, which is essentially free, lodged in a particular body, has no knowledge of its
true nature (as a spark of paramaatma or God) as it identifies itself with the body in which
it is lodged. Similarly, though all the souls are, at one and the same time, the sparks of the
body of the Deity (God), they do not realise this and carry on as if they are separate from
one another, largely determined or influenced by its character and mental content
inherited or cultivated in the long course of its evolution through beginningless time. Each
soul lives a life of separate individuality with no sense of identity with others. Herein lies
the great illusion –maaya – mama maaya (My illusion), as Krishna calls it. This illusion is
the veil cast by the gun’as of prakriti over the spirit, the overcoming of which leads to
liberation. As Krishna stated: “ajnaanena aavritam jnaanam, tena muhyanti jantavah -
knowledge of the Divine spirit is veiled by ignorance (ego) and so beings are deluded” –
(5.15). The only remedy to get over this illusion is to surrender to God who is great in His
power and compassion (maam eva ye prapadyante, maayaam etaam taranti te – (7.14).
Prapadyante means renouncing maaya and worshipping the Deity alone.

Dasavatharams described earlier is found in Sri Vedanta Desikan's Daya sathakam also . In
sloka 82, Matsya and Koorma avatarams is stated to be done for the not to get any
pollution and to be fulfilled with all good characters. In sloka 83, Varaha Avatara is
praised as carried out to protect the world from the devastating floods and to be free from
the overflowing ocean.In sloka 84, how Narasimha Avataram glorifies is described. In
the midst of much shaking terrorist look, anger, cruel face, Sriman Narayana giving
dharsan to child Prahlada with His lotus eyes, and pious nature motherly feeling love and
affection (Daya) as though feeding with milk to a baby, is excellently portrayed as
Danujadimbathasthana saroja sadrusa.Sloka 85, on Tiruvikrama avatara to make us free
from sins,sloka 86, parasurama avataram 87 on Ramavatharam, insisting saranagathi, 88
on Balarama avataram and in 89, Krishnavataram as Gitayantham thama niraggrathavathi
Daye is said ,to remove the inner evils in our mind through Gita. .
32nd Nama is Bhavano, which means ,one who generates the fruits of karmas of all jivas
for them to enjoy. Bhuta bhavana in 9th nama is one who originates and develops all
elements ,as a cause. In this it is an effect as Karma palan.
Karma,Karma yoga and Karma palan mentioned in Gita in many ways and some are
indicated here. .
1.Karma does not bind one who has renounced the work. (5.3)
2. Work done with selfish motives is inferior by far to the selfless service or
karmayoga. Therefore be a karmayogi .Those who seek to enjoy the fruits of their work are
verily unhappy ,because one has no control over the results.(2.49)
3. In karma yoga no effort is ever lost, and there is no harm , even a little practice of
this discipline protects one from a great fear of birth and death (2.40)
4. A man who sees action inaction and inaction action has understanding among men
and discipline in all actions he performs.(4.18)
5. The person whose mind is always free from attachments who subdued the mind
and senses and who is free from desires attains the supreme perfection of freedom from
karma through renunciation. (4.21).
6. As blazing fire reduces wood to ashes ,similarly the fire of self knowledge reduces
all karmas to ashes (3.38)
7.Delusing arises from anger, the mind is bewildered by delusion. Reasoning is
destroyed when the
mind is bewildered ,one falls down when reasoning is destroyed. (2.63)
8. There is neither this world nor the world beyond nor happiness for the one who
doubts.(4.40)
9.One who has control over the mind is tranquil in heat and cold ,in pleasure and pain
and
in honour and dishonour and is over steadfast with the supreme self. (6.7)
. 10. One gradually attains tranquility of mind fully absorbed in the self by means of a
well trained intellect and of thinking nothing else. (2.66)
The atma is thus bound in the body because of its past karmas. Atma has to shell out its
good / bad karma “palan”.It has to neutralize everything before it gets prepared to attain
salvation or moksha. It has to engage itself in doing various karmas which are the means of
removing the karma “palans”.
When atma descends to earth after enjoying its stay at heaven or sufferings at hell, it
brings with it some residual karmas. Based on these residual karma “palans” available with
atma the further acts are performed. When one‟s karma is of sufficient quality,he or she
will escape the cycle of birth and rebirth and rejoin the Universal Soul. We believe that
there is a soul (atman) within every living thing and that this soul is part of the Universal
Soul (Paraman), which is formless but can nevertheless manifest itself in any form it
desires. Thus, the aimof the atman is to seek reunion with the paraman, and thereby get out
of the cycle of births and rebirths .
As part of such Karmas the Five duties of Nithyakarmas may be practiced by all,which are
1. Worship of God. To help God conscious in all activities, for the feeling of
togetherness,2.Study of Vedas and scriptures .To refresh mind with sacred knowledge 3.
Contemplating on teachings of sages and forefathers .To preserve cultural heritage 4.
Provide food to needy. To create spirit of sharing with others.5.Serve guests .To practice
traditional hospitality. .
The next nama is Bharta is supporter. He nourishes all of us by giving Himself to His
devotees as though doing like that is His nature. This nature of supporting is of Him, by
Him, To His devotees, for His devotees.
In Gita 9.5, SriKrishna says as supporting all beings ,but not dwelling on them .I am the
self ,the efficient cause of all beings”. He is the supreme cause for the universe the
substratum for all names and form .From Him beings stem forth and he support all living
creatures and He is the life in them all. Sriman Narayana is thus stated as material cause
,instrument cause and the efficient cause cause in creations.
We human beings must train our self as everything is God's Gift. Just like Koorathazhwar,
who had much wealth,prestigious forefathers, and higher studies had nothing as pride, we
must feel that is nothing is in our efforts. Sriman Narayana is only the supporter in all
aspects in our livelihood.

Meaning:
In the First two lines, Kaliyan describes the intimidating appearance of the
HiraNyan laid on His wide lap. His nails resembling VajrAyudham in power are
mouth (menRa pEzh Vaay). His Vajra-like, lustrous teeth are chewing His
upper and lower lips (menRa vaaLL yeiRu) in uncontrollable rage over the
asuran's Bhaagavatha apachAram. With His mighty nails, Sri Nrusimhan is
destroying HiraNyan (avuNan ponRa vaLL uhirAl pOzhntha Punithan).
Kaliyan salutes the HiraNya SamhAra Moorthy as "Punithan", the most sacred
One (Pavithran, Paavanan). The rapidity with which He came to His Bhakthan's
rescue and His unmatchable protective grace propels Kaliyan to salute Him as
Punithan. This avathAram was exclusively for His Bhakthan, PrahlAdhan. If
PrahlAdhan is the Premier Bhakthan, the Lord who came to his rescue at the
most critical time has to be the Premier God as attested by Swamy
NammAzhwAr: "Yenn SingapirAn perumai aarAyum seermaitthE". In aapath
Kaalams, His bhakthAs appeal to Him for rescuing them and He responds to
His true BhakthAs immediately as evidenced by RukmiNi DEvi's address to
KrishNa as Narasimhan: "KaalE Nrusimha". This is true advocacy of Lord
Narasimhan's mahimai as "Punithan". This "Naarasimha Vapu: SrImaan" is
Paavana Narasimhan at one of the nine sannidhis. He is saluted by Sri VishNu
Sahasra Naamams as: "Pavithram MangaLam Param". He is also recognized as:
"PavithrANAm pavithram yO MangaLAnam cha MangaLam".
To match the JwAlais of JwAlA Narasimhan, the whole side of Ahobilam hills
is ablaze with the steady red fire (ninRa semthee), which fills itself with
(MoNDU) the strong, rotating winds and sets the new trees on fire and
maintains the intensity of the heat all around up to the skies (neeLL
visumbhodu sooRai iriya). This makes it extremely difficult for the pilgrims to
climb the hills and offer their salutations to Lord Narasimhan.
The pilgrims think that they found a break in the enveloping flames and think
of using that pathway to climb upstairs. The rotating wind stirs up the fire
and the pilgrims beat a retreat to safety and stay at the foot hills. These
wild fires and their intensity as well as frequency make the Ahobilam hills
hard to climb to have the darsanam of BhagavAn Narasimhan (SenRu
kaaNDathaRkku ariya koil).
In Puri town, to the western side of Gundicha temple and to the east of
the sacred Indradyumna Tank there is a temple known as the Yagna
Narasimha temple. Devotees can approach the temple on the right side
of the road leading from Gundicha Temple towards matiapara sqaure.
The temple is facing towards west and the height of the temple is about
60ft. Local people also called this temple as Nrusingha Temple and
Nrusimha Temple.
Yagna Narasimha Temple
The presiding deity is Lord Narasimha. There are two images of Lord
Narasimha inside the temple, one behind the other. The image in front
is called Santa Narasimha. In local language 'Santa' means 'Calm' or
'Sober'. Anyone who sees this image of Lord Narasimha will have his
anger, frustration, and anxiety will vanish. The Deity in the back is
called Ugra Narasimha. In local language 'Ugra' means 'Angry'. He is
the internal mood of Narasimha.
As per the legend, When Kalapahad attacked Puri and was smashing
Deities of various temples, he saw Santa Narasimha image and his
anger subsided; hence he could not break the Deity as he had planned.
Santa Narasimha’s features are human-like. He has a sharp human
nose, a large curly mustache, and an outstretched tongue. Non-Hindus
are not permitted in the temple, but the Deities are visible from the
door.

Like her mother
When Kaikeyi insists that Lord Rama be banished to the forest, Dasaratha's minister
Sumantra laments Dasaratha's decision to marry Kaikeyi. “I warned you not marry her,”
he tells Dasaratha. He had warned the king because he was afraid that Kaikeyi would be
like her mother, said M.V. Anantapadmanabhachariar in a discourse.
Kaikeyi's father could understand the language of all creatures, and Kaikeyi's mother had
shown no concern for her husband's life, when she demanded that he tell her the
conversation between two ants. Her husband had warned her that he would lose his life
if he revealed the conversation to her, but still she insisted. Finally, her husband had to
banish her.
By insisting that Dasaratha banish Rama to the forest, Kaikeyi shows a similar lack of
concern for the welfare of her husband and of the family. She refuses to listen to
Dasaratha, who begs her to change her mind. Dasaratha is a king who is respected by all
other kings. Such a king offers to go down on his knees before Kaikeyi to beg her to be
reasonable. But even this does not help. She is adamant in her unjust demand.
It is not that she does not know the affection Dasaratha has for Rama. She knows that
Dasaratha, being the old man he is, will be unable to bear such sorrow. Yet she wants
Rama to leave. She shows that she is as insensitive as her mother. She does not care
about the consequences of her actions, but only wants that her words should carry
weight. Her goals and aims become supreme, and family welfare is pushed to the
background.
She does not think of the harm her act will do to the reputation of her son Bharata.
Would people not see him as the villain? She does not think of how Bharata would feel,
when he hears that Rama has been banished at the request of his mother, and that too
for the sole purpose of crowning Bharata. She does not pause to think whether her son
will ever respect her after this. Will she not lose the affection of her son? Will she not lose
the affection and regard of the people of the kingdom who love Rama? Thus Kaikeyi is
like her mother.
