A Media Plan’s

Reach
What is ‘Reach’?
Reach, in media is the
size of audience
exposed to
advertisements
through a particular
medium.
It is difficult to measure precisely. Usually,
companies make a rough estimate of how
many watchers/readers/listeners actually
follow their program. Sometimes, it may fall
below their estimate or be even higher.
For example, the Acnielson company
measures the number of television sets tuned
to a program based on a sample, but many
more or perhaps, fewer people may actually
be watching. In an attempt to get a true
measure of reach, they ask people (via e-mails,
telephone interviews, etc.) what they view or
what they read.
In simpler terms…
Reach is how you want
to reach your desired
and targeted audience,
without wasting funds,
exerting too much time
and effort. And if it
maximizes the
company’s resources,
then it’s a sure winner
to the corporate’s
higher up’s. :D
But, there is always an order of things

First, you have to make a plan. Y’know, media

objectives, outlines to how, when, who, and
what type of audience will be targeted.

Then your plan will be evaluated based on the

criteria of: creative suitability, idea, proven
effectiveness, availability, timing, and of
course, competition.
Speaking of competition…
You know what competition
is, right? When two or more
businesses compete to gain
customers or when used in
economics, it is a term that
encompasses the notion of
individuals and firms
striving for a greater share of
a market to sell or buy goods
and services.
But you have to know something…

Competition is also used in

other areas of life. You
know them! Sports,
Academics, etc..
However!
Since we’re in the
Communication and
Arts Department, we
mostly deal with
businesses,
marketing, and
advertising as well
as television and
radio…thingies. xD
:D
Ahh, young grasshoppers. Now, the time has
come. As Media Planners, one must know the
capacity of the major media types in reference
as to make a good media plan. Sounds scary,
innit? But it simply means you have to know
the different types of media that appeals to
your particular, targeted audience.
A checklist!
You must know:
- the targeted audience’s
media habits (which medium
they use most often(
-the products that catches
their attention
The type of message that
goes out to them
And of course, the $$$$
(COST). Now doesn’t that
look wrong lol?
And lastly,
You have to choose the medium to reach your
audience.

i.e. if your target audience is for people in their

mid 20’s to late 30’s (business-savvy people),
you would put your ads in a business type
magazine or newspaper!
It may be difficult BUT!
On the bright side, if your idea
gets approved, you get to see
your ads everywhere. :D you’ll
get the fame, and happiness you
ought to deserve. And a hefty
bonus of $$$$ to boot. So chin
up, grasshoppers! Sooner or
later, your time to shine and be
rich will come. :3
