Harmful Chemicals in Cigarette
a) Nicotine
i) Nicotine is a poisonous chemical in
cigarettes.
ii) It is highly addictive which makes it very
difficult to give up smoking.
iii) It hardens the blood vessel, so the blood
cannot flow easily.
iv) It can causes high blood pressure.
v) Nicotine also damage the respiratory
system and can cause lung cancer.
b) Tar
i) Tar is thick black substance in cigarette.
ii) It sticks to the walls of the respiratory
system.
iii) It corrodes the cell in the lung, causing
the lung to be less elastic and unable to
function properly.
c) Carbon monoxide
i) Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke
deprives the body of oxygen because
haemoglobin in blood tends combine
with carbon monoxide than with oxygen.
ii) Carbon monoxide can cause a loss of
10% of oxygen carried in blood.
d) Carcinogen
i) Carcinogen are chemicals which cause
cancer.
ii) Cigarette smoke contains carcinogen
such as benzopyrene.

a) Asthma
1. Asthma is a respiratory
disorder.
2. Its symptoms are difficulty in
breathing, wheezing,
coughing and feeling of
tightness in the chest.
b) Bronchitis
1. Bronchitis is a condition in which
the bronchi badly inflamed and
narrowed.
2. This can be cause by air pollutants
such as irritants in cigarette smoke.
c) Lung cancer
• Lung cancer is related to smoking
and inhalation of harmful chemicals
such as pesticides.
d) Emphysema
• Emphysema is a condition in which
the alveoli of the lungs are weakened
and damaged by chemicals such as
those from cigarette smoke.
e) Heart disease
Nicotine in cigarette smoke causes
narrowing of blood vessels. This makes
the heart beat faster and pump harder
to get blood to flow through the blood
vessels. This leads to hypertension or
high blood pressure.

• A pregnant woman who smokes
heavily runs the risk of giving birth
to a premature or still born baby.
