Beer Braised Beef

Serves 5-8, Total Time = 6-8 hrs, Active Time = 1 hr

Software Hardware
3 bacon strips, diced Slow cooker or large pot or Dutch oven
2 lbs beef stew meat, cut into 1 in cubes Skillet (optional)
½ tsp. pepper Little containers *see note
Kosher salt
1 tsp. vegetable oil
1 medium onion, either diced or cut into wedges
1 teaspoon minced garlic, a little more never hurt
1 bay leaf
12 oz. beer or non-alcoholic beer
1 tsp. soy sauce
1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried thyme
2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
¼ c. cold water
Hot cooked noodles

Preparation:

1. If using a Dutch oven or large pot, cook bacon in bottom until crispy, then add beef cubes,
sprinkle with salt and pepper, and sear on all sides.
2. Add onion, garlic, and bay leaf. In a small bowl, combine the beer, soy sauce, Worcestershire
sauce, and thyme. Pour over beef mixture.
3. Cover and cook on low for 5 ½ - 6 hrs or until meat is tender.
4. After cooking for a few hrs, in a small bowl, combine flour and water until smooth. Gradually stir
into mixture. Cover and cook on high for another 30 min or until thickened. Discard bay leaf.
Serve beef over noodles.

Notes:

 If using a slow cooker (as the original recipe suggests) cook bacon and sear beef in a skillet
before adding to a slow cooker.
 Replacing the thyme and bay leaf with a chives and parsley works well too.
 *It helps to prepare the software (i.e. chop onions, mince garlic) and put it in little containers so
when the time comes to add it, it’s ready to go, and measured.
