Claim: Teenagers losing sleep due to too much homework and

commitments outside of school

Nowadays, teenagers and being deprived of sleep. This is due to lack of time planning and because
of the amount of homework teenagers and given in school. Commitments such as sports related
activities do not help them either. This is because, they are restricted to the amount of time they
have in a single day and with that amount of time, they have to fit in all their school work, sports
related activities and school too which takes up almost half of the day already. This leads to
teenagers cutting their amount of sleep time to fit in all these commitments leading to undesirable
effects such as being tired in the day or getting frequent migranes.

In America this problem already is a large issue according to the 2004 poll by the national
sleep foundation. 2004 poll by the National Sleep Foundation . Over in America, there has
been complains about not getting enough sleep because of work and that students are cutting
down their amount of sleep time. According to the Sleep Foundation's survey, 60% of
children ages 4-17 years complained of feeling tired during the day during the past year.
Almost one out of every four students complained of frequently being tired during the day
often. Parents are noticing how sleepy their kids are too. In the survey, one out of every four
parents said they would approve of setting later school hours.

This problem isn’t just happening in America but in many other countries including
Singapore. In Singapore, the education system is very competitive and for a student to do
well, he/she must at least put in 4-5 hour of studying each day on top of school hours. This
would make it increasingly challenging for them if they have cca’s which is compulsory in
many schools. Therefore, statistics show that teenagers and sleeping lesser hours. The
recently published Philips Index for Health and Well-being report, a research conducted
across 23 countries including Singapore, found that 35 per cent of people feel they are not
getting enough sleep, impacting their physical and mental health.
