Question 4) How did you use new media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
Digital Equipment We used a variety of digital equipment when preparing and filming our music video. This included, a High Definition flip camera, a Sony Handycam video camera and an Apple Mac computer(including the software imovie). We had the advantage of having two cameras on set, and decided that the Sony video camera was to film the real footage for the music video, and we used the flip HD camera to film ‘behind the scenes’ which we later edited to show how we went about filming. Although the flip cameras produced a higher quality of video, they have quite a short battery life so we thought this would be suited for short behind the scene shots. So, we filmed our raw footage with the DV cameras, although the quality was not as sharp, the battery life is a lot longer which meant we could film for a long duration of time. Software

effects when editing our footage in Digipak and magazine advert, I used Adobe imovie. For example, we used a split Photoshop as it had a wide range of effects screen, to portray the juxtaposition in the and techniques to use. To the front cover, I female artist’s feelings. Without imovie, applied lighting in an effect called ‘coral we would have not been able to use the painter’ and chose the colours I wanted. If I editing technique to reflect her feelings. had not used this software, I would have We also put the whole video in black and not been able to create this effect and the white and adjusted the contrasts so that front cover would not look as professional they were all equal. If we had kept it all in with blended colours, but it would consist colour, the lighting in the shots would of block colours. have looked different and unprofessional. Social Networking
I published my CD Digipak design panels on the social
networking site ‘Facebook’ to gain feedback from my friends. If I did not a Facebook account, and was not able to upload my designs, online I would have had to look for an alternative way to advertise and gain feedback. I would have had to print my digi pak panels off and hand them out to people as posters or leaflets. This would have been more costly and time consuming, whereas uploading to Facebook was quick, easy and free.
As I was looking for feedback from my own Facebook
friends, they were more likely to partake in the feedback rather than strangers. Me and my group also used a Blackberry application called ‘Blackberry Messenger’ to contact each other and have a conversation consisting of the 4 of us about filming arrangements. Websites
Using websites such as YouTube enabled us
to broadcast our music video edits and final version online. This meant that our work could be viewed by a worldwide audience and not just a local audience. If YouTube did not exist then we would have to find an alternative way of publicising our music video. This would probably mean getting in touch with a media producer in order for it to be viewed by the public.
