Homework 8.

Due 11/18/10 before 12:30 pm

1. The excess Gibbs energy of a particular ternary liquid mixture is represented by the empirical
expression, with parameters A12, A13, and A23 functions of T and P only:

(a) determine the implied expressions for lnγ1, lnγ2, and lnγ3.
(b) verify that the result for part (a) satisfy the summability relation (eq. 11.99)
(c) For species 1 determine values for lnγ1 for the limiting cases: x1=0, x1=1, x2=0, x3=0. What do these
limiting cases represent?

2. For a binary gas mixture described by Ews. (3.38) and (11.62), prove that:

( )

See equation 11.87, and note that δ12 = 2B12 – B11 – B22.

3. Fifty (50) mol s-1 of enriched air (50 mol-% N2, 50 mol-% O2) are produced by continuously combining
air (79 mol-% N2, 21 mol-% O2) with a stream of pure oxygen. All streams are at the constant conditions
T = 25 oC and P = 1.2 (atm). Assume ideal gases. There are no moving parts.

(a) determine the rates of air and oxygen (mol s-1)

(b) What is the rate of heat transfer for the process?
(c) What is the rate of entropy generation ̇ (W K-1)?

4. A system formed initially of 2 mol CO2, 5 mol H2, and 1 mol CO undergoes the reactions:

CO2(g) + 3H2(g) --> CH3OH(g) + H2O(g)

CO2(g) + H2(g) -> CO(g) + H2O(g)

Develop expressions for the mole fractions of the reacting species as functions of the reaction
coordinates for the two reactions.
