Mixture and chemical equilibrium

1. Calculate the mean activity coefficient and activity of a solution of 0.02mol kg-1 NaCl(aq)
and 0.035 mol kg-1 Ca(NO3)2(aq) at 25oC.

2. A polynomial fit to measurements of the total volume of a binary mixture of A and B is

v = 778.55 22.5749x + 0.56892 x2 + 0.01023 x3 + 0.00234 x4
where v = V/cm3; x = nB/mol and nB is the amount of B present.
Determine the partial molar volume of A and B respectively.

3. Consider the decomposition of ammonium hydrogen sulfide.

NH4HS(s) NH3(g) + H2S(g)
Initially a sealed flask at 25oC contains 10.0g of NH4HS, NH3(g) at a pressure of 0.692 bar,
and H2S(g) at a pressure of 0.0532 bar. When equilibrium is established, it is found that
partial pressure of NH3 has increased by 12.4%. Calculate for this reaction.

4. Given the following reactions and their equilibrium constants,

2NO(g) N2(g) + O2(g) = 1 x 10-30

2NO(g) + Br2(g) 2NOBr(g) = 1.8 x 101

calculate for the following reaction.

1/2N2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) + 1/2 Br2(g) NOBr
5. Consider the following equilibrium.

2NO2(g) 2NO(g) + O2(g) = 0.50

Predict the direction in which the system will move to reach equilibrium in each of the following
situations.
a. PO2= PNO = PNO2 = 0.10 atm
b. PNO2 = 0.0848 atm, PO2 = 0.0116 atm, PNO = 0
c. PNO2 = 0.020 atm, PO2 = 0.010 atm, PNO = 0.40 atm

6. Consider the equilibrium PCl5(g) PCl3(g)+Cl2(g)

1mol PCl5 is allowed to come to equilibrium at a total pressure of 1 Bar, and the density of the gas in
equilibrium is 2.695g/dm3. Please calculate the (the temperature is 250 ).

7.(Optional) For Ideal solution A in B, derive and draw T-x Diagrams. Assume A and B gas is perfect gas.
It is known that the boiling point of A is 80.1C, boiling point of B is 110.6C, the standard entropy of
vaporization are both 85 J K1 mol1 At constant pressure 1 Bar.
(1) For pure A or B, prove that the vapor pressure at different temperature is following Clausius-
Clapeyron Equation as following:

( )

(2) Plot T-x diagram for this system.

Note: Ideal solution means the vapor pressure of A and B follows Raoults Law at all composition.
