Quiz No. 3

I. Find the solution of the following differential equation.

dy 2x 2
1. = y+
dx 1+ x 2
1+ x 2
dy
2. 2t − y =t+1
dt
3. cos2 ( x ) sin ( x ) y ' =−cos3 ( t ) y +1
dy −3 xy + y 2
4. = 2 (solveusing integrating factor )
dx x + xy
lnx sin ⁡( x) −1
5. y ' = y+ y
x x

II. Applications: Answer the following problems.

1. A radioactive isotope has a half-life of 26 days. You wish to have 27 grams at the end of 100
days. How much radioisotope should you start with?
2. Suppose that a corpse was discovered in a motel room at midnight and its temperature was
100 ℉. The temperature of the room is kept constant at 50 ℉. Two hours later the
temperature of the corpse dropped to 80 ℉. Find the time of death.
3. An unknown radioactive element decays into non-radioactive substances. In 180 days the
radioactivity of a sample decreases by 33 percent.
(a) What is the half-life of the element? half-life (days):
(b) How long will it take for a sample of 100 mg to decay to 69 mg? time needed (days)
4. Newton's law of cooling states that the temperature of an object changes at a rate
proportional to the difference between its temperature and that of its surroundings.
Suppose that the temperature of a cup of coffee obeys Newton's law of cooling. If the
coffee has a temperature of 195 degrees Fahrenheit when freshly poured, and 3 minutes
later has cooled to 181 degrees in a room at 66 degrees, determine when the coffee
reaches a temperature of 156 degrees.
