Introduction to Quadratic
Function (Situations, Equations
and Tables)
In our Activity 1, what equation
have we derived by observing
the changes of values of x and
y? 
2
y =x How many variables do we
have in the equation?
What is the
highest What is the relationship of the
exponent in value of y to the value of x?
the given Does value of x affect y?
equation?
Quadratic function is in the form of
2
y=ax +bx + c where a, b and c are
real numbers and a is NOT
equal to 0.
Let us have another example of
quadratic function
f(x)= x2 + 8x +15

Y = (x+2)(x+3) = x2 + 3x +2x + 6
Quadratic Functions Degree or Highest WHY a Quadratic Function?
Exponent
y = x2 + 3 2 • The equation has a degree of 2
y = 5x2+2x 2 • The equation has a degree of 2
f(g) = 3g2+2 2 We can use f(g) in place of y, meaning
the function of g. We need to use in
place of x. As we can see, the highest
exponent 2 is found in the term 3g2.
y = x(x+1) By distributive property, we can
multiply x(x+1) = x2+ x, the new form of
2
equation is y = x2+x, with the degree of
2.
y = (x+2) (x+3)
We can multiply (x+2)(x+3) using
2 foil method, the answer is
y= x2 + 5x + 6, here, the highest
exponent is 2.
y= (x+2)2
Applying the rule in square of
2
binomial, the new form of
equation is y = x2 + 4x + 4, which
has a degree of 2.
Activity 2 - It Models or Not
Directions: Write Model if each of the following real-life situations models
Quadratic Function and Not if it does not. [Hint: a situation that has a quadratic
equation (studied in module Week nos. 1-5) models quadratic function.]
1. Adding 1-peso coin to your savings every day. How many 1-peso coins do you
have after 5 days?

 It can be represented by y = 1(x) or y = x, where y is the number of 1- peso

coin after several days (x ). Example: 1. x= 5, substitute 5 to x in y =x, so
y=5.
Answer: __________
Activity 2 - It Models or Not
2. Finding the width of a rectangular lot when its length is 10 meters longer than its
width and its area is equal to y.
· The situation involves length, width and area of a rectangular lot.

Answer: ___________

3. Find the speed of a car and a truck, if a car travels
20 kph faster than the truck, and covers 350km in
two hours less than the time it takes the truck to
travel the same distance.
· The problem can be solved by the equation y = x2-
2x -35.

5. Finding how fast a ball can reach the ground after
throwing it up the sky.
With the equation h(t) =16t2 + 64t.

Answer: ___________
Situations that represent Quadratic
Function:

Finding areas or dimensions

Reproduction of Viruses

Finding the speed

Projectile: like firing up a bullet and throwing of
objects up the sky.
 Other situations are:

 Bank savings with compounded interest which can be

computed by A= P(1+r)2.
 Work problems can be solved by equations
transformable to quadratic equation, so, it represents
quadratic function.

Activity 3– What I am? Subtract My Values
Directions: Tell whether the given equation with tables of values in each
number is a quadratic function or not, then subtract a value of y to its adjacent
value, if their differences are not the same subtract again the resulting differences.
The 1st and 2nd tables are done for you.

The Quadratic Function and Its Table of Values
You can identify if the given table of values of x and
y represents quadratic function even without finding its equation.
Just remember the two steps below.
1.Subtract the adjacent values of x,if their first differences
are the same, then you can proceed to step number 2.
You can subtract the values from left to right or from right to left.
2. Subtract the adjacent values of y; if their second differences
are the same, then it represents quadratic function.
What I have learned…

Fill in the blank with the correct word, phrase or

mathematical terms.

bx + c, where a, b, and c are ______ with “a ” not
equal to ______.
• * A quadratic ______ is an equation in two variables
