GENERAL INTRODUCTION

 Originally proposed by Huxley

 At that time it was known as SLIDING
FILAMENT THEORY
 Now it is known as CROSS BRIDGE THORY or
RATCHET THEORY
Mechanism
Mechanism at molecular level-
•Boat,bars and oars
•Cross bridges formation
•Attachment swivelling detachment cross bridge
cycle
• power stroke
•Type of contraction
Role of Troponin, Tropomyosin & Calcium
ions
Summarized Mechanism-
On the sarcolemma an action potential (AP)
develops

Action potential proceeds downwards the

sarcolemmal membrane

AP enters within the muscle cell via T-tubule

AP comes in contact with the cisterns

Released Calcium ions binds with the

Troponin-c which results in loosening
of the tie between Troponin & Actin

It causes Tropomyosin filament to move

away
Myosin head now gets attached to
these uncovered sites

Power stroke develops

Sliding of Actin

Shortening of sarcomere
CONTRACTION DEVELOPS

The released calcium ions now return to

the cistern

Relaxation develops
Rigor mortis
Treppe-staircase phenomenon,many
curves are formed each having a higher
stimulus than previous one.
Clonus-if repeated stimulus is given
during contraction
Tetanus-streamlined curve is produced
bcz repeated stimulus is given during latent
period.
Twitch-a single muscle will produce a
single muscle curve
