Experiment # 5

Topic: Centre of Gravity

Aim: To determine the centre of gravity of an irregular shaped object

(lamina) using the plumbline method.

Apparatus: Lamina, retort stand and clamp, cork stopper, optical pin,
plumbline (mass + inextensible string)

Diagram:

Procedure:

1. Ensure that the pivot (optical pin stuck in a cork) is stable (by placing
in a retort stand).
2. Remove the pin and make three small holes in the lamina (the
irregular shaped object) near its edges. (Note: Holes should be
approximately equal distances apart)
3. Ensure that the lamina is swinging freely.
4. Place optical pin through one of the holes and fix in the clamp so that
the object can swing freely.
5. Suspend plumbline from pin (pivot). When the lamina is in equilibrium
(both object and plumbline stop swinging) mark a cross on the object
exactly behind the plumbline, near the opposite edge of the hole.
6. Repeat procedure for the other two holes. Remove object and use a
ruler and pencil to draw straight lines from each hole to the opposite
cross.

Precautions:

State at least two.

Data Collected:

Place your lamina in your lab book.

Data analysis:

1. Why must the intersection of the three lines be the centre of gravity?
2. When the procedure is repeated a third time, how will this distinguish
whether the location of the centre of gravity is accurate or not.

Conclusion:

Write a suitable conclusion.

Sources of Error:

State three.
