Question No. 1: A cylindrical steel core is encased inside an aluminum tube. Diameter of the steel core is
(1 + 0.1X) inches. Inner diameter of the aluminum tube is (1 + 0.15X) inches and outer diameter of the
aluminum tube is (1.2 + 0.15X) inches. Length of the assembly is 6 inches. Moduli of elasticity for steel
and aluminum are 30x106 psi and 10x106 psi respectively. Figure 1 shows the assembly of the steel
cylinder and aluminum tube. Find the deflection at top if P = 20 kips.

weighing (2500 + X) lbs. The diameters of steel and aluminum wires are and inch respectively.

The moduli of elasticity for steel and aluminum are 30x106 psi and 10x106 psi respectively. For steel yield
stress is 40 ksi, factor of safety is 2 where as for aluminum allowable stress is 12 ksi. Determine the
stresses in all wires and check if the wires are failing or not. Figure 2 shows the assembly of wires and
rigid bar.

Question No. 3: For the column given in figure 3, determine the deflection of top. Include the self weight
of the column. Consider unit weight of steel as 490 lb/ft 3 and modulus of elasticity of steel as 30x106 psi.
The area of cross-section of the column is 10 in2.
