CVE163- Steel and Timber Design

First Prelim Online Exam

October 11, 2021, 1st Sem. AY 2021-2022

1. Figure 1 below shows a built-up beam made of A36 steel with Fy = 248 Mpa. The flanges
are continuously connected to the web by means of fillet welds. The beam has 10 meters
span and is simply supported at its ends, with additional lateral support at its midspan
(i.e. unbraced length is half the span). Using formula in handouts, answer all the
following questions.

a) What is the elastic section modulus Sx of the beam? (2 pts.)

b) What the plastic section modulus Zx of the beam? (2 pts.)

c) What is the radius of gyration ry of the beam section? (2 pts.)

d) Is the flange of the beam section compact? (2 pts.)

e) Is the web of the beam section compact? (2 pts.)

f) Computing for Lp, is the actual unbraced length of the beam Lb less than Lp ? (3 pts.)

g) Considering the computed Lp in the previous question and assuming Lr = 15.0 m , what
is the nominal flexural strength of the beam? Use Cb = 1.0. (5 pts.)
note: No need to compute for Lr , just assume Lr = 15.0 m.

h) What is the allowable flexural strength of the beam? (2 pts.)

2. The W530 x 138 beam is to transmit a total reaction of 1,500 kN to a steel base plate over
full area of a concrete support. All steels are A36 with Fy = 248 Mpa. Conrete f’ c = 27 Mpa.
Answer all the following questions. (15 pts.)

a. What is your design dimension for the bearing length N of the beam bearing plate?
Round-off your design dimension to the nearest safe 5 mm. (5 pts.)

b. What is your design dimension for the bearing width B of the beam bearing plate?
Round-off your design dimension to the nearest safe 5 mm. (5 pts.)

c) What is your design dimension for the thickness t of the beam bearing plate?
Round-off your design dimension to the nearest 5 mm. (5 pts.)
3. Figure 3 below shows a W530 x 201 beam reinforced by cover plates at its top and bottom
flanges. The width of the cover plate is fixed at 300mm. The beam is simply supported over
a span of 8m and carries a uniformly distributed load of 260kN/m, including its weight. The
capacity of each shear connector is 30kN. Use Fy = 248 Mpa and Fb = 0.60Fy. For W530 x
201, bf = 319.40mm, d = 585mm., Ix = 2.21 x 109 mm4, Sx = 7,556,000 mm3,
Answer the following questions. (15 pts.)

a) What is your design dimension of the cover plates’ thickness? Round-off dimension to the
nearest safe 5 mm. (6 pts)
Note. Be sure to check that the elastic section modulus of the beam section with your designed
cover plates is nearly equal but greater than the required section modulus.
b) What is the required spacing of the shear connectors 1.0 m. from the support.
Hint: Obtain first the shear V at 1.0 m. from the support. (5 pts.)
