Directions:

1. Read the instructions properly.

2. Analyze each problem carefully. Calculate and present your solutions neatly and clearly. Use
long size bond paper. Draw the free body diagram as much as possible to support your
solution. For items with calculations, put your answers in the box. Make assumptions when
necessary.

3. The exam is only good for 3 hours from 9:00 am to 12:00 nn today, December 05, 2021.
However, to compensate for any problems (e.g., power interruption, poor internet
connection, etc.) that might occur during this period, there will be an allowance of 6 hours
for the submission before the deadline.

4. Whichever is smaller, a deduction of 20% of the total score or 10 points per hour late will be
penalized for late submission. No submission will be accepted beyond the exam date.

5. A maximum of 20% deduction of the total score will also be penalized for not following the
instruction and proper formatting including blur image, too much erasure, missing data below
(ID No, Name, etc.) and illegible penmanship.

6. NO credits shall be given once the submission is not an original work.

7. Only word file is permitted. If the size of the document is beyond 5 MB (currently reduced
by the system), three submissions will be accepted.

8. Upload your file(s) to MOLE 3.0. Submission through email will not be accepted.

CVE162 - Principles of Reinforced/Prestressed Concrete 2

S.Y. 2021-2022 First Semester

THIRD EXAM

Problem 1: A rigid retaining wall of 5 m height has two layers of backfill. From top layer to a
depth of 2.0 m is a sandy clay having ∅ = 20°, c = 12 kPa and γ = 16.4 kN/m3. The bottom layer
is sand having ∅ = 30°, c = 0, and γ = 17.5 kN/m3. Draw the pressure distribution diagram.
Determine the total active force acting on the wall and its location from the bottom. (15 pts.)

Summary: Fa = y=

Problem 2: A counterfort wall of 10 m height retains a non-cohesive backfill. The void ratio
and angle of internal friction of the backfill respectively are 0.70 and 30° in the loose state and
they are 0.40 and 40° in the dense state. Calculate and compare active and passive earth
pressures for both cases. Take the specific gravity of solids as 2.7. (20 pts.)

Loose state Pa = Pp =
Summary:
Dense state Pa = Pp =

Problem 3: A cantilever retaining wall shown in the figure supports a horizontal backfill of
compacted gravel having a unit weight of 18 kN/m 3. The ground surface also carries a uniform
live load q. Allowable net soil bearing pressure at the base of the footing is 260 kPa. Coefficient
of friction between the foundation and soil is μ = 0.55. Angle of internal friction is ∅ = 35o.
Assume drains are provided to prevent the built-up of water pressure behind the wall. Use the
following values: γ c = 23.50 kN/m3, f ' c = 27.6 MPa, f y = 414.70 MPa. Use a batter (slope of the
face of the stem) of 20 mm per meter. Assume 75 mm as steel covering. Ranges of the
dimensions of a, b, t and B are indicated in the figure. Do not neglect passive force. Using NSCP
2015, etermine the following:

THIRD EXAM

a. Determine the factor of safety against sliding and overturning (20 pts.)
b. Determine the effective depth of the base of the stem (10 pts.)
c. Determine the steel reinforcement at the heel of the base using 28 mm ∅ as main bars and a
12 mm ∅ temperature bars. (10 pts.)
d. Determine the reinforcement at the toe of the base (15 pts.)
e. Determine the vertical and horizontal reinforcements of the stem of the cantilever retaining
wall. (20 pts.)
f. Determine the adequacy of the shear capacity of the stem (10 pts.)
g. Determine the adequacy of the bearing capacity of the soil (10 pts.)

Note: In your solution, make some comments or brief explanation about your calculation and
assumption when needed. Put your final answer in the box.
