Activity # 11
One-Way Slab Design
Directions: Analyze each problem carefully. Calculate and present your solution neatly and
clearly. Draw the free body diagram, stress and strain diagram, and/or other pertinent illustration
as much as possible to support your solution. Use NSCP 2015. Make assumptions when
necessary.
Problem 2. The upper deck of a building will be designed such that two equal spans of the slab
will be supported by beams at both ends. It will be built monolithically with one (1) interior and
two (2) exterior beams having the same width of 350 mm and length of 7 m. The center-to-center
spacing of beams is 4.5 m. The slab is used to carry a service dead load of 5 kPa (excluding its
own weight) and service live load of 9 kPa. Compressive strength of concrete is 28 MPa and
yield strength of steel is 375 MPa. Unit weight of concrete is 24 kN/m 3. Consider 16 mm ∅ main
rebar and 10 mm ∅ shrinkage and temperature bars in the design.
a. Draw the slab to be designed. Label the figure properly. Determine the positive and
negative moments based from the moment coefficients provided by the code for this
type of slab construction. (5 pts.)
b. Determine the minimum slab thickness required. (5 pts.)
c. Calculate the effective depth of slab by considering minimum concrete cover. (5 pts.)
d. Determine the spacing of 16 mm ∅ main rebar by considering the negative and
positive moments in the slab (10 pts.)
e. Determine the spacing of 10 mm. (5 pts.)
Problem 3. Make a general flowchart for this topic. Show necessary equations and drawings. (10
pts.)
