CEng 144n – Principles of Reinforced / Pre-stressed Concrete

2nd semester SY 2021-2022

Problem Set no. 3

Moment Capacity of Slabs and T-beams

Instructions: Solve the following problems by showing complete and logical solutions.

Formatting & submission instructions: Answers should be legibly handwritten in an A4 size paper. Provide a
margin of about one inch from all edges. Please also write the questions in your answer sheets. Write your name
and the subject code and title at the top right portion of each page. Write page numbers at the bottom right
corner of each page. Scan the sheets and collate as one pdf file. Submit through the agreed submission channel.

Problem #1
A trial design for a simply supported one-way slab has the following properties: The overall thickness is 100
mm, reinforced with 10 mm main bars spaced at 150 mm O.C. Concrete strength is 20.7 MPa, and steel yield
strength is 275.8 MPa. Concrete cover provided to the main bars is 20 mm. Assume the unit weight of
reinforced concrete to be 24 kN/m3.
a) What is the effective depth to the main bars? (Ans: 75 mm)
b) What is the uniform linear dead load of the 1-m wide strip? (Ans: 2.4 kN/m)
c) If a live load of 4.8 𝑘𝑁/𝑚2 is to be carried by the slab for a clear length of 2.1 m, what is the factored
moment at the midspan of the 1-m wide strip due to the dead load and live load? (Ans: 5.8212 kN-m)
d) What is the ultimate moment capacity of the 1-m wide strip? (Ans: 9.2142 kN-m)
e) What is the maximum allowable spacing of 10-mm dia shrinkage / temperature bars? (Ans: 392.7 mm)

Figure 1
Problem #2
An architectural plan for a library corridor specifies that a slab overhangs from an exterior beam as shown in
Figure 1. The live load is 3.8 kPa uniformly distributed, with an alternate concentrated load of 4.5 kN applied at
a location to produce maximum effect. Assume the 4.5 kN concentrated load is effective on a 1-m wide strip and
acting at the free end (to produce maximum moment at the fixed end). A trial design for the section at the face
of the support (dashed line) has the following properties: 190 mm slab thickness, reinforced with 10-mm
diameter main bars spaced at 150 mm on centers, concrete strength = 20.7 MPa, steel yield strength = 275.8
MPa. Concrete cover provided for the main bars is 20 mm. Assume the unit weight of reinforced concrete is 24
kN/m3.
a) What is the minimum allowable thickness of the slab according to NSCP 2015? (Ans: 187.5 mm)
b) What is the linear dead load acting on the 1-m wide strip? (Ans: 4.56 kN/m)
c) What is the factored negative moment at the fixed end of the strip due to the combination of dead load
and distributed live load? (Ans: 12.996 kN-m)
d) What is the factored negative moment at the fixed end of the strip due to the combination of dead load
and concentrated live load? (Ans: 16.956 kN-m)
e) Confirm that the ultimate negative moment capacity of the 1-m wide strip is enough for the required
factored negative moment. (Ans: 20.9113 kN-m)

Problem #3
Figure 2 shows a midspan section of the T-beam system at EB-103. The clear span of the beams is 7.61 m.
Tension reinforcement is provided as six 25-mm bars bundled by twos as shown. Compression reinforcement is
also provided as two 25-mm bars. The longitudinal reinforcement is encased in a 12-mm stirrup cage with
concrete cover of 40 mm. The concrete strength is 3000 psi (20.7 MPa), while the steel yield strength is 275.8
MPa. Use a tension-only reinforced section analysis.
a) What is the effective depth to the centroid of the tension bars? (Ans: 523 mm)
b) What is the effective flange width for an interior T-beam? (Ans: 301.9025 mm)
c) Assuming a rectangular section analysis, what is ultimate moment capacity? (Ans: 326.097 kN-m)
d) What is ultimate moment capacity of an interior T-beam? (Ans: 326.409 kN-m)

Problem #4
Refer to the given conditions of Problem #3. Now consider the exterior T-beam.
a) What is the effective flange width for an exterior T-beam? (Ans: 300.634 mm)
b) What is ultimate moment capacity of an exterior T-beam? (Ans: 326.2016 kN-m)
