Malignant Salivary Gland Neoplasm

The most common malignant neoplasms occurring in salivary glands are:

DMD2CC

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma- is the most common type of salivary gland malignancy in children. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma can also be found in other organs, as bronchi, lacrimal sac and thyroid. Cell Orgin Caused by chromosome defects and specific gene mutations that lead to uncontrolled growth of certain cell types, such as lung, breast, colon, prostate, and pancreas. In most cancers the specific genetic defect is not known. There are many factors that cause these changes, such as hormones, viruses, inflammation, chemicals, and radiation, in addition to as yet unidentified carcinogenic agents Prognosis Generally, there is a good prognosis for low-grade tumors, and a poor prognosis for high-grade tumors. Adenoid cystic carcinoma.- is a rare type of cancer that can exist in many different body sites. It most often occurs in the areas of the head and neck, in particular the salivary glands; but has also been reported in the breast, lacrimal gland of the eye, lung, brain, bartholin gland, trachea, and the paranasal sinuses. It is sometimes referred to as adenocyst, malignant cylindroma, adenocystic, adenoidcystic, ACC, AdCC. Cell origin The exact cause of adenoid cystic carcinoma is not known. Cancer is associated with chromosome defects that lead to uncontrolled growth of certain cell types. There are many factors that cause these changes, such as hormones, viruses, inflammation, sunlight, chemicals, and radiation, in addition to as yet unidentified carcinogenic agents. Prognosis Disease stage at the time of diagnosis may play an important role in predicting the clinical outcome of patients with these tumors. Despite their generally slow and indolent growth in other locations, ACC arising in the lung may in certain cases be more aggressive
