This document provides the schedule and reading assignments for the SAILN Tier III Open the Doors to Communication Summer Institute held from April 11-15, 2011. Each day focuses on a different topic related to teaching reading and features presentations by experts in the field. Day 2 covers designing thematic units and vocabulary acquisition. Day 3 looks at interacting with authentic texts and extensive reading principles. Day 4 examines using sustained silent reading in the classroom and teaching foreign language reading. Participants are asked to post a written summary and give a five minute synopsis of one of the assigned readings.
