SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF TANSA VALLEY

Tansa Valley is presenting mostly populated by Agris, Kolis(both sea Kolis and Hill Kolis), Bartis, Thakurs, Kathkaris, Dublas, Vaitis, Konkanis and Dhodiahs. Tribles The hilly forested interior is still the home of tribals, mostly Thakurs, Varlis, Katkaris and Kolis. In the up-lands occupied by these people, forest dominate the economy, but locally the valley bottoms, with pockets of rich soils produce quality rice. Scheduled castes-As per 1971 census 18 castes were reported which in rural areas of district was 1.32%. Scheduled tribes: The district is aptly known as the home of aborigines who are known as Adivasis. They account for 25.40%. The Mahadev Kolis are more advanced in literacy while the Kathodis are most backward. Each caste has their own traditions & customs which are as following: Konkanis - In Thane they are found only in the north of Mokhada and the east of Dahanu, and they have a tradition that their fore fathers were brought from Ratnagiri to garrison the hill fort of Gambhirgav. They worshiped Khandoba, Devi, the Sun and the Moon and Cheda and Hirva. Their preist are Brahmans. They have a headman patil who settles their disputes. HERITAGE OF TANSA VALLEY Gosavis- They are of four classed Giris, Puris, Bharthis and Kanphates, the Giris are Shaivites and theSEM 12 Vaishnavs. ARCH IN ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHITECTURE Bhartis , M- ARCHM- Most of them are hereditary SEM 12 , IN ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHITECTURE Gosavis. Jangams- Jangams, literally movable, i.e. wearers of the movable ling. They are the priests of the Lingayat faith and are all immigrants from the Kanarese country. They are the priests of the special form of Shaiv worship that was founded, or perhaps renewed Basav. Varlis- Probably originally Varlis or uplanders had three sections Murdes, Davars and Nihiris. The first two are found in the north, eat and drink together and inter-marry, but not with the Nihiris, who belong to south Mahin, Jawhar and Wada. The god whom they chiefly worship is Vaghya or Vaghova in the form of a roughly carved tiger on a piece of wood covered with red lead. The favoured place for Vaghyas image is on the village boundary or under a large banyan tree. They say that tiger is Vaghyas dog, and that he comes about once a month to Vagyas image to pay his respects, and lies there for some time. Every year in Kartik all Varlis go Vaghya and have a grand ceremony in his honour, offering sacrifises and daubing him with red lead. Their household god is Hirva who is represented either as a bundle of peacocks feathers, as a hunter with a gun, a warrior on a horse back, or a five headed monster riding a tiger. They also worship the god Narayan and the goddess Humai. Kolis- They are skillful men raising the finest kinds of rice . Their use of such surnames as Chavhan, Povar and Jadhav, seems to point to some strain of the Rajput blood, which is found in greater strength among the higher HERITAGE OF TANSA VALLEY cultivators and land holders. Madhadev Kolis- Their original home was in the Mahadev and Balaghat hills and came here in the 14th century. They were originally Lingayats and employed Lingayat preist, Raul Gosavis, and were not converted to Brahmanism till after the end of the 18th century. Their chief object of worship is Khanderao, commonly called Khandoba an incarnation of Mahadev whose chief temples are at Jejury and Bhimashunker in the Deccan. Bhairu, Bhavani, Hirova and Khandoba are their household deities.
Kathkaris - They are believed to have entered the district from the north and to have been originally settled in Gujrat in district Surat. There are five divisions: Sons, Dhors, Marathas, Sidhis and Varats and eight common surnames: Vagle, Povar, Diva, Mukane, Vagh, Jama, Bhoir and Chavhan. They are much darker and slimmer than the other forest tribes. The Sons and some of the Dhors shave the face and head and wear a very marked topknot. But the northen cow eating Kathakaris generally have long matted hair and wild bearded. Their religion is not Brahmanic. Their chief object of worship is tiger god who is suppose to look with peculiar favour upon them and very seldom harms them and they hardly ever go shoot him. His image is generally setup in the forest or on the boundary of the village. In Dhor Kathakaris house there may some times be same as devil god whom they TANSA VALLEY HERITAGE OF call Cheda. Thakurs- They are divided into Ka-Thakurs and Ma-Thakurs. The surnames of Ma-Thakurs are Vagh, Jambhya, Pardhya, Ghugre, Vara Kamli, Sid, Lachka, and Sutak, those of the Ka-Thakurs have not been ascertained. Their home tongue in Marathi spoken. They are truthful honest teachable and harmless. Their chief gods are Hirva, Cheda, Vaghia, Bahiri, Bhavani, Khanderao, Vetal and the spirits of several mountains in Mokhada and Nasik. They are represented by silver plates with pictures on them. From a beam hangs the god Hirva, a bundle of peacock feathered daubed with red lead, who, is worshiped on the Dasera day with bread goats and chikens. Outside the house, but close to the village stands the village tiger god, Vaghya, whose great day is Divali. They have a strong believes is spirits and are often possessed by Vaghya.

OTHER FACTS BY CRIT (collective research initiatives trust) The present population of the three villages is just about 10,000 people with substantial amount of population (about 50%) classified under scheduled caste and tribes. . The place is however famous for hot water springs and a series of temples built for local deities and saints. The temples of the mother goddess Vajreshwari, saint Nityananda and a local diety, Bhimeshwara are located in the area. Several myths and legends propogated though word of mougth and through local publications construct the place as a highly powerful mythological site capable of healing difficult desases. Moreover, geological surprises from the hilly volcanic terrain with all its water reservoirs and forest covers have added to mythical notions associated with the area. This has rendered the area into a religious pilgrimage site, traditionally attracting the neighbouring tribal populations and more recently, even large numbers of inhabitants. More than one third the private property is owned by the large temple trust in the area. The surprising fact however, is that this component is rising very sharply. In other words, in recent years, the land owned by temple trusts is increasing and land owned by the village community is decreasing. We also find that the newly acquired land is immediately fenced and a nonagricultural certificate is obtained for such lands. Within these lands several leisure based tourism centers like nature parks, meditation centres, hot spring spas etc. are being developed. A type of spiritual tourism is sought C . R . I . powerful members in the decision making process and are known to leverage their influence at all the levels of the government. Hence when the government GANESHPURI decided to spent money on the development of the area the most important problem that was articulated was that the spiritual atmosphere and the santity of the place was under threat due to haphazard construction activities undertaken by the village folk NITYANAND ASHRAM One of chief proposals was to relocate the main road within the village to NITYANAND ASHRAM outside the villages so that the traffic would not disturb the pilgrims in the area. However the village community resisted the plans of the government arguing that the interest of villagers were not considered in the planning process. The road was a lifeline to the settlements along it with the state transport passing MAIN ROAD through it. The relocation of this road would mean the complete cut off of these C.R.I.T settlements from the public transport.
