Document: Sustainable Sites, Prerequisite 1 Erosion & Sedimentation Control

Technical advice received from IGBC: Please provide a narrative describing stacking and stabilization of top soil during construction. Also, include the various post-construction measures that have been implemented by project to ensure compliance with the requirements of the prerequisite. DIAL Approch followed: To preserve the top soil prior to the commencement of bulk earthwork, following measures were adopted. 1. Prior to the start of major bulk earth work, characteristics of a construction site were studied for temporary soil stabilization planning for BMP selection. The following characteristics were considered for study: a. BMPs. b. Flow Conditions c. Slope Inclination and Slope Length d. Soil Properties e. Surface Area f. Atmospheric Conditions g. Accessibility of Equipment h. Drainage to Listed Water Bodies i. Duration of Need 2. Top soil upto a level of 20-30 cm was excavated in all the areas which were supposed to be subjected to bulk earthwork and was transfer to site nursery for development of landscape to be planted post construction. Part of topsoil was transferred for the plantation of turf grass at areas adjoining runways & taxiways.

3. The following measures were adopted for stabilization of soil. Cement Mortar lining: The Cement Mortar lining was executed on the inclined slope with the open drain wall. This lining avoids the loss of soil, erosion of soil, silting in the open drains. Placement of Grass : Green grass has been placed in the flank ( the soil area between the Runway ,Taxiways and Stands). The soil on which the green grass placed on the ground which was compacted minimum 97% of its Modified Maximum Dry Density (MMDD). Cement Mixed Soil: A thickness of 500 mm of Cement mixed soil was laid over the normal Subgrade and compacted minimum 98% of its Modified Maximum Dry Density (MMDD). These construction techniques avoid the loss/erosion of soil during construction and after construction.
