METHOD STATEMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF

EMBANKMENT ON UNSUITABLE GROUND

1. GENERAL

This work generally consist of identifying unsuitable areas where embankment construction
takes place and strengthening the original ground by excavation and replacing the existing
material with granular as per MORTH 5 th Rev. Clause 305.4.6 and 305.4.6.1 or any other
methods as directed by Engineer.

Soil of low bearing capacity of unsuitable material for fill or embankment has to be removed
as in accordance to MORTH 5th Rev clause 301.3

2. MACHINERY & EQUIPMENT

The equipment to be used for Soil Replacement Works:

a) Hydraulic Excavators
b) Motor Grader / Dozer
c) Vibration Roller
d) Dumpers

3. SEQUENCE

2.1 Identification of unsuitable area.

2.2 Tests to determine suitability of soil.
2.3 Demarcation of unsuitable areas (trial Pit)
2.4 Depth of USM to be removed.
2.5 Removal of unsuitable materials.
2.6 Joint dipping or Survey of removed area (Quantifying the USM
area)
2.7 Back Filling

METHOD STATEMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF

EMBANKMENT ON UNSUITABLE GROUND

4. METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION
Upon identifying unsuitable areas Engineer shall be notified for his decision on methods of
remedial works and once confirmation received the following shall carried out as per Clause
305.4.5 to 305.4.6

1) Setting out, identify the area, trial pit.

2) Removal of unsuitable marshy soil will commence from one end of area bt excavating
up to 2.0m depth.
3) Immediately a joint measurement to confirm the depth is carried out and approved
selected material of quarry dust is used to backfill up to height of say 1.0m and
subsequent layers are built up from there on to match original ground level.
4) The process of the above operation is advancing repeatedly until the whole replacement
exercise is completed and ready to receive normal embankment construction.

CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENT ON SOFT GROUND

 Upon Completion of joint survey of OGL’s, embankment material shall be

spread over the first layer by placing successive loads in a uniformly distributed
layer of a minimum thickness required to support the construction equipment.
Once the prepared surface is capable of supporting the construction equipments
than successive layers shall be constructed in accordance to Clause 305.3.5 to
305.3.6.

 Other than above if so directed by Engineer approved geosyntetic material such

as Geotextile shall be used to increase the bearing capacity of the existing
ground for Embankment Foundation Stabilization and to reduce the tendency to
spread laterally, causing shear stresses at the base of the embankment,
resulting in failure. The ground shall be prepared in accordance to
manufacturer’s specification prior to laying of Geotextile. Upon Laying of
Geotextile, embankment material shall be spread over uniformly on the laid
Geotextile in layers to a minimum thickness as recommended by manufacturer
before successive layers are laid in accordance to Clause 305.3.5 to 305.3.6.

CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENT UNDER WATER (WATER LOGGED) AREA

In the event the ground, supporting embankment is under water/water logged, filling
from one end to another using end tipping without compaction until a ground capable of
supporting embankment shall be carried out using Sand or rubbles as per Clause
305.4.6.

CONSTRUCTION OF EMBANKMENT IN MARSHY & BOGGY SOIL

For areas where Marshy & Boggy soil is found, these unsuitable material shall be
excavated from one end to another in one direction up to the bottom of marsh or firm
levels indicated or as directed by Engineer and to full width of toe. Upon completion of
excavation, it shall be backfilled with sand up to 800 mm above water table and
compacted as per Clause 304.37 The remaining embankment shall be constructed as
305.3.5 to 305.3.6.

The suitable earth material obtain from excavation and approved borrow area shall be
used at embankment areas by spreading the material in layers by using Crawler
Dozer/Motor Grader not exceeding 200 mm and compacting it to MDD 95% compaction
using vibratory roller up to 500mm below sub grade. As for the sub grade, it shall be
compacted up to MDD 97% compaction.

5. SITE RECORDS

All works to be carried out pursuant to the above shall be recorded and verified jointly by ICT
for record and claim purposes. The samples of records to be used for the above works are
summarized as per Table 1.

6. METHOD OF MEASUREMENT

Quantity for Earthwork shall be measured according to BOQ Bill No 2. As for works that not
mentioned in BOQ but necessary, new rates shall be submitted as a variation to the
contract. All Quantity of excavation and embankment fill shall be obtained from joint survey,
which will be carried out prior to earthworks between ICT. Cross section will be produced
and quantity shall be computed, verified and approved by ICT jointly.

7. SAFETY MEASURES

All safety precautionary measures shall be taken as stated below: -

 Signboards shall be placed along the right hand side on increasing chainage at
every 500 meters i.e. “KEEP RIGHT WORK IN PROGRESS”, GO SLOW WORK
IN PROGRESS”.
 Moveable signboards shall be place at area where heavy machineries and survey
works being carried out. Flagman’s shall control the movement of machines and
tippers/dumpers at these areas. Signboards such as “CAUTION MAN AT WORK
GO SLOW”, “CAUTION GO SLOW WORK IN PROGRESS”.
 Concrete Pillars painted with red and white stripes shall be placed at every 50-
meter along the entire working areas as a guide for the traffics during at day and
night.
