Welcome to back-to-school season, and to the Country Review Restaurant Issue. We hope you enjoy reading about some of the fine eateries in our Valley, and even find a few that you havent tried before and perhaps check them out! In other news, we are excited to announce that Country Review has partnered with several other local publications, radio stations, public relations firms and others to create a group that will be known as the Valley Media Alliance (VMA). Working together will allow us to offer our readers and our advertisers a partnership that will complement our desire for each of us to offer quality in our ability to support our community. Country Review will be setting aside several pages of free advertising space for nonprofits, to be released on a first-come, first-served basis. Our Editor is constantly receiving requests for free ad space and this will allow us to have a fair system in which to offer just that. Once the space is filled, our regular, deeply discounted nonprofit rates will apply. Country Review prides itself on being a community advocate and several of our contributors are heavily involved out and about! We hope you all will continue to enjoy the summer weather, and as always, support local business! By shopping, dining and LIVING locally, you continue to support our cities, our infrastructure and our first responder services. There are also still shows available to enjoy at Wiens and Monte de Oro - look on page 41 for a listing of upcoming concerts and live events. Enjoy! WHY SUPPORT KOMEN?

by Katie Parker, Executive Director

13th Annual Komen Inland Empire Race for the Cure

ancy Brinker promised her dying sister, that she would do everything possible to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the worlds largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and advocates and the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to curing breast cancer. Through events like the Komen Race for the Cure, the organization engages people in the breast cancer movement and raises funds to assist women and families with accessing life-saving services with the ultimate goal todiscover and deliver the cures for breast cancer. Virtually every major advance in breast cancer research had been touched by a Komen grant. In 1998, Komen Inland Empire, Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, pledged to provide needed resources and improve breast health access in the communities within their service area of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties including the Coachella Valley. The Affiliate office is located in Temecula and provides staffing for health fairs and breast health/breast cancer presentations. For information regarding programs, volunteer opportunities please call 951-676-7465; email info@komenie. org or visit www.komenie.org Since the 1999 inaugural Komen Inland Empire Race for the Cure, the Affiliate has funded nearly $5 million in grants to meet the Inland Empire needs for uninsured/underinsured residents and over $1 million to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program. 75 percent of the net proceeds from the Komen Inland Empire Race for the Cure remain in the Inland Empire for grants that provide breast health education, diagnostic services and treatment support programs while 25 percent supports breast cancer research. helping HANDS When to Keep Kids Home from School

ts school time againalong with school supplies, homework, and cooler weather, comes the cold and flu season. Here are a few tips on what to look out for when deciding to keep your child home from school:

Natasha Rodgers, M.D., Rady Childrens Healthcare

Fever: When your childs fever is 100.4 degrees or higher, your child should stay home. Most schools would like children to be fever free for 24 hours with no fever reducing medication before returning to school. Cough and Cold: Children who have cold symptoms without fever are probably okay to go to school. Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis): Look for redness, itching or swelling, and a clear, white, yellow or greenish liquid to collect in one or both eyes. Pink eye can be highly contagious. Your child should be seen by their primary care doctor before returning to school. Stomach Flu (Gastroenteritis): If your child seems dehydrated (shows excessive thirst, dry mouth, extreme fatigue or lethargy), has vomiting, or diarrhea, its a good idea for them to stay home from school. Sore Throat: Consult your childs pediatrician if the sore throat is accompanied by difficulty swallowing or breathing, pus or red and white patches in the throat, swollen or tender lymph nodes in the neck, or if the sore throat lasts longer than one week. Ear Infection (Otis media): A child complaining of ear pain should be seen by their pediatrician in order to provide treatment recommendations. If your child cannot talk, look for signs of ear infection like ear pulling, irritability, ear drainage, balance difficulties and trouble sleeping. Rashes: Keep your child home from school and consult their pediatrician if your child has a rash and any of the following: joint pain, fever, sore throat, small red dots that cannot be felt when touched and do not fade when pressed, bruises that are noninjury related, the rash lasts more than one week. Encourage and remind your child to wash his or her hands frequently to prevent getting or spreading illness. Allow your child to return to school once symptoms have been absent for at least 24 hours without the aid of medication. Lastly, consider your childs ability to interact with peers and pay attention in class. Even if a child is recovering from an illness and is technically well enough to go to school, it may be in his or her best interest to stay home and fully recuperate.

The Little Wine Shop Around the Corner

By Sandra Shrader

ike tendrils on a grapevine, wine shops are a naturally connected outgrowth of any region where vineyards and wineries dot the landscape. Thats true here in the wine-producing Temecula Valley where local, mostly family-run wine stores offer a charming blend of good times, wine tastings and wine knowledge along with retail purchases of the fruit of the vine. And just like there are varieties of wine, the shops offer their own unique flavors to the art of selling the stuff of viniculture.

Shortly thereafter, Palmas idea became reality, and today he estimates that 95% of his inventory is produced by Temecula Valley vintners, including dessert wines and much-soughtafter wines from the regions boutique wineries which are not open to the public. Palma also acts as a mini visitors center for the wineries, he said, because he keeps Wine Country info on hand as well as directing visitors at his shop to various wineries. 28522 Old Town Front Street Temecula, CA 92590. 951-699-0929

Temecula House of Wines

A yesteryear ambience mingles with palate-pleasing wines from the valleys vineyards at Temecula House of Wines, located in the historic 1920s-era Palomar Inn Hotel in Old Town Temecula. Owner of both the hotel and wine shop in the hotels converted lobby, Carlos Palma experienced an epiphany when he saw a need to sell Temecula Valley wines under one roof. I love the Temecula Valleys wines, said Palma, and one evening about six years ago, I was enjoying a glass of local wine, and I suddenly got the idea about how great it would be to have a one-stop shopping place where the wines produced by the valleys wineries could be sold instead of having to travel out to each winery for its own particular wine.

Wine On A Dime

Theres no reason to put up with snooty servers or wipe out your wallet if you want to enjoy good wine, according to Don and Michelle Campini, owners of Wine On A Dime, located in Temecula. There are no wine snobs at Wine on a Dime! says Michelle. Our big thing here is customer service, and we want to be able to teach people that there are $10 and $15 bottles of wine that are as good as wines that cost $30, $40, and $50. Former owners of a popular delicatessen in Temecula, the Campinis saw a niche for selling good wine that people could buy at affordable prices without having to go to the bigger stores like Costco or BevMo, and where they could ask

questions about the wine they were purchasing. And Wine on a Dime, which opened in January, 2010, really lives up to its name because one of the stores most popular features, said Michelle, is the ten-cent wine tastings of wines from all over the world so that customers can have the chance to taste wines they normally wouldnt try. 28061 Jefferson Suite #5, Temecula, CA 92590. 951-694-3463

The Wine Company

A few short years after Dan Atwood planted Syrah grapes on his Temecula property and established Atwood Estate Vineyard, the vintner started The Wine Company, a wine store also located in Temecula. Weve been in business for ten years, said Atwood, who can often be found these days behind the counter at the wine store, and thats a main reason why The Wine Company has four to five times the inventory of the other wine shops in the valley. With his background as a winemaker, Atwood says hat hes passionate for all things wine, and The Wine Company stocks more than 600 wines varieties from nine different countries. Hors d oeuvres are available to pair with the wine of your choice. But despite its long tenure and big selection of higher end, harder-to-get wines, said Atwood, The Wine Company offers a relaxed environment of comfortable couches, bar tables, and cozy booths for enthusiasts who just want to savor the magical pleasure of a good wine. 29073 Overland Dr., #A, Temecula, CA 92591. 877-4TV.WINE

Dudleys Wine & Gifts

Its a casual atmosphere at Dudleys Wine & Gifts in Murrieta, and owners Eric and Christina Dudley prefer it that way. We want our customers to come in and be as casual as they want, said the Brooklyn-born Eric Dudley. We want them to have fun, and be in a place where they dont have worry about how they pronounce the name of a wine. Part of the fun at the swirl and sniff routine at Dudleys, said Eric, is the background music of reggae and rock, having customers introduce themselves to each other, and doing toasts every night. Dudley, a certified wine specialist, can also spin some entertaining and informative stories about the history of the wines on the racks at the shop. The only wine store of its kind in Murrieta, Dudleys Wine & Gifts opened three years ago, and offers wines from around the world as well as a large assortment of wine-related giftware. 40675 Murrieta Hot Springs, #B5, Murrieta CA 92562. 951-461-2225

Stellar Cellar

A combination of live music on Fridays and Saturdays, a monthly wine dinner, and weekly guest speakers give Stellar Cellar, located in Old Town Temecula, a stylish chill out cachet. In addition to selling wines from around the world and handcrafted beers, Stellar Cellars monthly dinner event local and seasonal cuisine from local artisans, and the guest speaker/ wine tasting events on Thursdays showcase a variety of wines with hors d oeuvres that complement each other. The live music ranges from blues, jazz, pop and folk. 28636 Old Town Front Street, Temecula, CA 92591. 951-676-2722

heres just something so fresh about going for a spin in a convertible. Call it a fun adventure. Call it free-flying. Call it cheaper than therapy. Or maybe you just have to call it experience thats hard describe to anyone who doesnt see the charm of a wind-whipped hairdo and dusty car upholstery.

He loved the look of them and the stylish, flamboyant designs which just grabbed peoples attention, he said. The cars were bold and beautifulthey were works of art. Not like the boxy shapes of cars today. Starting with a 1928 Ford Model A Ford Sports Coupe which he acquired for $23 in the early 1950s, Robert Knapp began amassing his collection decades before the Internet, often finding cars for a song by browsing through magazines. Over the years, Knapp picked up small and nimble convertibles like the 1949 Crosley Hotshot Roadster as well as big, fast and tailfinned cruise boats like the 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. There are also some very unique autos at the museum including a 1903 Buick horseless carriage, a rare 1928 Franklin Airman (famous for having the only successful air-cooled engine to remain in continuous production) and a Kaiser Darrin, a 1954 vehicle that was the first car to use fiberglass in the body. Also on display is one of engineer, car maker and television marketing pioneer Madman Muntzs unique 1952 Jet cars which featured seats upholstered in alligator skins and backseat armrests containing full cocktail bars! But the crme de la crme of the Deer Park collection and worth every bit of the admission fee alone, said Clark
continued on page 47

Whatever you call it, Americans have had a crush on the convertible since the last centurys early days of motoring. And if you are one of those millions who gets starry-eyed over the beloved ragtop, then you need to set your GPS for the site of the countrys greatest collection of American convertibles, located just a short drive south of the Temecula Valley. Nestled on fifteen acres of terraced grapevines adjacent to the Lawrence Welk Resort in Escondido, the Deer Park Winery and Auto Museum showcases a stunning and remarkable array of 130 gleaming and mint-condition vehicles including every important American convertible manufactured from 1946 (and earlier) to the muscle cars of 1980s. The museum was founded in 1979 by real estate entrepreneur Robert Knapp to house his ever-growing collection of vintage cars, according to his son Clark Knapp. My dad just loved American convertibles, said Clark, who has reopened the three buildings of Deer Park museum to the public in 2009 after it had been closed for a number of years following his fathers death in 1996.

present on or near the beach and a reserve for these marine mammals, called Seal Rock, is just offshore.

It may look like an undisturbed utopia from the outside, but when the extreme low tides occur, some of the smallest and simplest creatures at the edge of Neptunes kingdom suddenly have to contend with exposure to either a hot sun or freezing winds while being constantly battered by unrelenting waves. On top of that, they have to worry about being the next happy meal for their neighbor! Despite such epic battles, marine life does miraculously thrive in tide pools, delighting anyone who hopes to touch a starfish or watch hermit crabs duke it out over an abandoned shell or even gets lucky enough to see a shy octopus. There are a few beaches in San Diego County where rocky reefs appear when tidal conditions are right, and just about an hours drive from Temecula Valley is the coastline of La Jolla which is home to some of the most must-see tide pools. The Casa Beach, or otherwise known as Childrens Pool, is a small, picturesque beach located at the corner of Coast Blvd. and Jenner Street in La Jolla. Partially protected by a seawall, the beach has a wealth of mussels, crabs and fish in its tide pools. During much of the year, seals and sea lions are also
22 | Country Review August/September 2011

A short walk to the north of Childrens Pool is Shell Beach which is at the south end of Ellen Browning Scripps Park on Coast Blvd. and Girard Avenue. There is a small cement stairway from the park leading directly to the fairly large Shell Beach tide pool area which teems with the likes of anemones, barnacles, limpets, crabs, urchins, sea stars, snails and sea cucumbers during extreme low tide. During the winter months, it is also possible to find a variety of shells there due to the beachs unique geographic layout. A third and impressive tide pool section can be found about two hundred yards to the north of the Scripps Pier and La Jolla Shores. Dike Rock Tide Pool includes an area filled with cobblesized rocks, boulders, mud, sandstone and algae-covered flats. Part of the La Jolla Underwater Park marine reserve, the site gets its name from a volcanic bench of rock that has pushed through a large gap in the sedimentary rocks and runs perpendicular to the beach. Parking is usually available along La Jolla Shores Drive, the La Jolla Shores Beach parking lot or near Scripps Institute of Oceanography where there are two staircases just south of the pier leading down to the beach. continued on page 46

Next Generation Sizzler Appeals to Guests Sense-abilities

hile still in the parking lot, guests sense the Murrieta Sizzler at 40489 Murrieta Hot Springs Road is different. Oversized Americana murals adorn the restaurant exterior. At the entranceway, the unmistakable smell of BBQ Tri Tip beef one of the most popular menu items -- smoking over mesquite wood is a welcomed surprise. If diners didnt feel hungry before, they do now. Welcome to the Next Generation of Sizzlers, as envisioned by BMW Management, Inc, Sizzlers largest franchisee. Temecula residents and high-school sweethearts, Gary and Sally Myers, started BMW Management in 1983, when they opened the valleys first casual dining restaurant a Sizzler. They gutted the existing Murrieta Sizzler in 2010 to create a comfortable yet energetic environment for guests who appreciate fresh food at a good value. Inside the restaurant, diners see fresh ingredients being mixed into delicious Chopped Asian Salad, SpinachAlmond-Craisin Salad and Greek Salad on the demonstration counter built into the Endless Salad Bar. They hear sizzling platters being delivered to guests tables by staff motivated to provide worldclass service. They touch the contemporary Americana furnishings found in Next Generation Sizzlers, but most importantly, they taste the difference fresh not frozen food makes. Over the past three years, Sizzler has focused on rejuvenating itself through updated dcor and food items. The latest menu addition is handcrafted, 100 percent freshly ground USDA hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Tony & Joan Nanci host Fundraiser For Cause Near to their Hearts

n June 27th, 2011 Anthonys Ristorante sponsored a golf tournament, dinner and auction to raise funds for the Neurofibromatosis (NF) Childrens Tumor Foundation, a cause that hits close to home for Tony and Joan Nanci. Their grandson Thomas was diagnosed with this disease at the age of 8 and to date has had four surgeries on his head and neck to combat the recurring tumors which put pressure on his nerves and spinal column. Throughout it all, Thomas has remained an upbeat and personable young man who is a pleasure to be around and rarely talks about his problems. He had his most recent surgery just before the golf tournament. He wanted to attend the festivities but due to some complications, he was unable to. NF is a disease defined by tumors that grow along nerves in the body or on or under the skin. As the tumors increase in size, they press on vital areas of the body, causing problems in the way the body functions. NF is usually diagnosed in kids between 3 and 16 years old. Mike and Jamie Jacobson, friends of the Nancis (and an unbelievable Father/Daughter team) were the organizers of the entire event. Mikes company, Michael D. Jacobsen Insurance, was the primary sponsor. The golf tournament was held at Bear Creek and 92 golfers participated. Monster Energy Drinks supplied the golfers with refreshments throughout the day, and a new BMW was offered by Murrieta BMW for a hole-in-one on the 13th hole. After golfing, the golfers headed to Anthonys for a raffle, live auction and dinner. 150 guests attended the evening event which was emceed by disc jockey Greg Cozzo of 94.5FM. Greg read a touching letter from Tonys son Tom about the struggles of his son Thomas and his battle with NF. The raffle and auction were extremely successful with rousing and competitive bidding for items donated by local businesses and restaurants. An added bonus was the musical styling of Oscar Snow.

On July 22nd, Tony presented the Childrens Tumor Foundation with a check for $17,700. The Foundation was truly amazed at the amount of money raised by a local restaurant in Murrieta. Tony and Joan would like to thank the following people, without whom this event would not have been possible:
Mike and Jamie Jacobson .......Organizers and Major Sponsor Home Smart.......................................................................Sponsor Monster Energy Drinks ...... Supplied drinks and donated the Monster Girls to assist with the raffle and auction. Boris Saids BMW of Murrieta .............Supplied the car for a hole-in-one and generously bid at the auction. The Triangle Murrieta .................................................Sponsor Frank & Pat Garza of PV Maintenance ..................................... Generously bid at the auction. EBS, Inc. .............................................................................Sponsor Greg Cozzo, 94.5 .................................................................Emcee Oscar Snow ........................................................................... Singer Jamie Jacobsen, Irene Sweetland, Peggi Nash ......................... Organizers of the Raffle and Live Auction Anthonys entire staff.......All worked the entire day to ensure that this event was the best it could be.

Tony and Joan are truly touched by the generosity of their friends and clients. If you would like to make a contribution to the NF Foundation please remit to: Childrens Tumor Foundation 11601 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 500, Los Angeles, CA 90025 To Learn more about NF and the Childrens Tumor Foundation go to www.ctf.org

FINE INDIAN CUISINE

ocated on Jefferson Avenue in Temecula is a brand-new culinary destination. Mantra Indian Cuisine in Temecula is the second location for Mantra Restaurants. Sumit Sharma and Ajit Singh opened the Corona location of Mantra in January 2010. The Corona location was such a breakout success, Sumit and longtime friend and business partner Manny Singh made the decision to open another site. Mantra Temecula opened in July of 2011 and is already gaining a steady following, as well as attracting patrons familiar with the Corona location that live locally. The three partners have over 25 years of experience as successful restaurateurs. Serving traditional Northern Indian fare, Mantra has several specialties. The Tandoori Chicken is roasted in the tandoor to a coppery brown. Lasuni Chicken is boneless white meat chicken, marinated with garlic and spices and roasted in the tandoor. Another favorite dish is the Chicken Tikka Masala, which is Tandoori Chicken served in a tomato and butter gravy. Lamp Pasanda Nawabi consists of marinated lamb, cooked with coconut sauces and cream gravy. A buffet is available daily for lunch, offering a wide variety of dishes - both vegetarian and non - as well as desserts. On Sundays they offer a special Champagne Brunch. Worth noting is that the items on the buffet table change daily, so you could

visit every day and have something new. If you prefer to order from the menu, it is vast and offers something for everyone, including extensive vegetarian selections, with vegetarian appetizers such as Aloo Tikki - mashed potatoes with herbs and spices, then deep fried, or Paneer Pakoras - cheese fritters. Desserts include Kheer - rice pudding garnished with nuts, or Kulfi - Indian-style ice cream. Two of our team members stopped in for lunch recently and were surprised to see the large crowd after only three weeks in business! Everything they sampled on the buffet was fresh, hot and mouth-wateringly flavorful. Service was attentive and friendly, and the bread bowl of garlic naan was kept full throughout the meal. With the incredibly reasonable pricing for the buffet ($7.99 M-F) this is going to become a regular lunch stop for many people in our Valley! Sumit, Ajit and Manny are dedicated to the sharing and showcasing of Indian food and culture, and follow the philosophy of great food, excellent service, value for your money and a fun dining experience. The spicy, mouthwatering aroma as you enter the restaurant lets you know you are in for a treat! Mantra can be found at 27645 Jefferson Avenue, Suite 106, or at 480 N. Main Street in Corona. www.mantrarestaurants.com

f you mention zip-lining to anyone locally, Ive noticed that most of them think of Catalina, or the Wild Animal Park in San Diego. Did you know there is a place not far up the 15 freeway where you can experience this adrenaline-pumping adventure activity? I found out for myself not long ago. Skull Canyon EcoExperiences in Corona, open since Fall of 2009, offers two ziplining courses that range from easy to hair-raising. Family-owned and -operated, Skull Canyon offers a truly unique experience. I arrived at the property and was greeted by several people, including Yvette, the Event Coordinator in a way that made me feel very comfortable and as if I had walked into a group of friends. After some preliminary instructions, I was buckled into my harness and given my trolley - the trolley is the piece of equipment you carry with you throughout the course, which hangs on the cable and allows you to zip! Given the instruction, Do NOT drop this! - I was very careful with it, and didnt! On went the helmet and gloves (provided) and then a fun photo in front of the parks banner. Next was a bunny zip - short and low to the ground for practice purposes. I was ready! We all climbed into a big yellow beast known as Monster Crawler - a 1967 Land Rover Safari Wagon with 53-inch tires, usually only on-site on the weekends - and when I say climbed, I mean climbed! And we were on our way. I was taken on the scenic tour as we climbed to a slightly higher elevation when we stopped at a most unexpected sight - a Koi pond. The property on which the park is located was once a chicken farm, and the openair tank is part of
32 | Country Review August/September 2011

the antique irrigation system. The water is now used to irrigate the many palm trees that are stored on the property and are for sale. After feeding the Koi (and the random Bluegill) we began a tenminute hike up the hill. Lead Tour Guide Paul Davidson pointed out several highlights along the way, including a sighting of a cool local lizard, as well as a cave that taps into a natural spring, feeding the irrigation system at a rate of five gallons per minute. My other Guide, Isabel, and Demi - who was in training (we did our first zip-line together) - were a couple of fun girls who helped shape my experience. A great conversationalist, Paul kept us laughing as we headed to the first zip-line station. The Original Course consists of seven ziplines that meet each other as you zigzag down the hillside. Finish one, unhook, short walk, and hook back up to the next line. What I have a hard time deciding how to put into words is the actual experience. I was never frightened (especially after I heard that a bunch of girl scouts had done the course a few days earlier). I guess the best descriptor would be exhilarating. The longest zip-line on the Original Course is 660 feet, and it was awesome. I let go of my harness and hung backwards ... wow. But I wasnt done! After completing the original course, which took about an hour and a half including training and hiking, Yvette said, Oh but you HAVE to do X3! Whats X3, you say? That would be the third of the three EXTREME lines in the park, totaling 4400 feet of ziplines. X3 is 1600 feet by itself, with almost 60 seconds of zip time. Pure, healthy, oxygen-infused rush. I was told that several groups of bachelors en route to Vegas have stopped off at Skull Canyon simply to run X3 on the way. Anyone ages five and up, or 60-250 pounds can zip-line at Skull Canyon. They are open seven days a week, and reservations are required. Groups of up to 30 can be accommodated. The team of people at the park make the experience fun and memorable. If you are looking for something exhilarating and just plain cool, you have to check it out! www.skullcanyon.com

MAKING THE SPLASH SCENE

S
By Sandra Shrader ummer is here again in the Temecula Valley, and you know what that meansits water park season! So if youre feeling hot and bothered by Mr. Suns scorching rays, its time to chill out and hit the giant water slides, wave motion pools and misting cabanas available at some of the water parks in and around the valleys landlocked locales.

VAIL LAKE RESORT

Probably the great-granddaddy of water slides in California can be found at Vail Lake Resort, just a few miles east of Temecula. Created in the 1970s for a recreational vehicle park in operation at the time, the resorts three water slides were recently upgraded in 2007 to provide faster, smoother and twist-ier thrills. Our water slides were built in 1974, said Bill Johnson, who bought the park, lake and campground amenities in 1997 and gave the site its present name. Im pretty sure that they were the first public water slides built in California! The 325-foot slides which twist and turn down an easy slope had been closed since 1986 so when Johnson decided to reopen them, he called upon their original builder, water park designer Richard Croul, to help bring everything up to date. Originally the slides were concrete so we repaired them and resurfaced them with about an inch and a half of foamthe same stuff thats in football helmets, explained Johnson, and then we sprayed polyurethane on them so they are really slick, and raft rides can get really fast. Johnson said plans are in the works at Vail Lake Resort for a whole new down down hill experience with a mile-and-ahalf-long water slide which will descend 600 feet down a nearby mountain, dropping sliding enthusiasts into Vail Lake. Hours and fees for the Vail Lake Resort water slides are: Fri. 2-6 PM, $10/hr; Sat. 10 AM-6 PM, $10/hr or all day pass $20; Sun. 9 AM-2 PM, $10/hr. Half day passes for Friday and Saturday only are $15. Visit www.vaillakeresort.com/activities/swimming-poolsand-waterslides.html for more info. Mulligans group sales manager, and with the weather here getting as hot as it does throughout the summer months and early fall, we think the area needs a water park. We believe it will be a big hit here! Construction plans to convert half of the fun centers seven acres into a Western-themed water park are expected to take place in three phases over the next five years. This summers muchanticipated Phase One will consist of five speed slides, multilevel platforms, interactive aquatic controls and what is being called a Big Splash Pumping Station. Located at 24950 Madison Avenue in Murrieta, Mulligan Family Fun Center was opened in 1996, and features popular activities like miniature golf, go-cart racing, and laser tag. If Phase One of the water park proves to be as popular as Mulligan Fun Center officials expect, future attractions could include more extreme water rides and a lazy river.

s Shakespeare in the Vines ends its sixth year of producing outdoor Shakespearean theatre amid our beautiful Temecula Valley Vineyards, it fills us with amazement at how far weve come in our journey towards being a destination for Shakespearean theatre. Audiences have come from as far North as British Columbia, Europe, and from all four corners of our domestic United States. Weve been published as an event not to be missed in the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and the New York Times and in AAAs Westways Magazine. We are a proud member of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of the Americas (and have been featured in their Quarto magazine) as well as the Inland Theater League. And weve been honored with numerous awards for theatrical excellence for each of our seasons! In the next five years and beyond we look forward to continuing to grow in renown as a company and to expanding our educational outreach in partnership with the Temecula and Murrieta School Districts and beyond. We will strive to bring you one of the best Shakespeare experiences in the country. But all of this would not be possible without the outpouring of community support we continue to receive: the audience who comes to see our shows and spread the word; the wineries who so graciously give up three weekends of wedding profits to host us on their sites; our volunteers and their countless hours of dedication to acting, directing, designing, building and painting sets, costumes, photography, videography, lighting and sound for the shows; nor without our generous sponsors and supporters. These people have worked work hard behind the scenes and given selflessly to support the dream of Shakespeare in the Vines and wed like to thank them publicly.

Our host wineries: Stuart Cellars Winery, Mount Palomar Winery, Wilson Creek Winery, Wiens Family Cellars, Frangipani Estate Winery and Keyways Winery. Our fellow theatrical companies and organizations: Fine Arts Network, Old Town Temecula Community Theatre, Triple Threat Productions, Play With Your Food Productions, Arts Councils of Temecula and Riverside County, and the Community Foundation. Individual friends and colleagues: Richard Romano, Neil and Summer Potter, the Ryle Family, Charles and Nancy Coe. The SITV Board Members who work tirelessly year-round to make everything happen as it should: Denise Walker (President), Winston Earle (V.P), Wendy Akerley-McKee (Treasurer), Patti Egan (Secretary), Eric Dunn, Mona Rose Lujano, Dr. Katherine Fuller, and Beverly Stephenson. And last, but certainly not least, SITV Advisory Board Members: Walt Allen, John Edward Clark, Kimberly Seilheimer, Richard Romano, Robi Akerley-McKee, and Geoff Ryle. Thank you all so very much for supporting the dream! We welcome volunteers in all capacities! If interested in being a part of this wonderful organization email: info@shakespeareinthevines.org. May the Bard be with all!

THE QUEENS

OF ROCK
by Richard Blade

o think they used to say that women couldnt rock!! When I first started in American radio at the beginning of the 1980s, there was a consensus of opinion that you should never play two female artists back to back on the air as that would cause the listeners to tune out. Songs by women just arent strong enough to be played one after another, the program directors were told by the radio consultants. At this point I should jump in and let you know the official definition (or at least my official definition) of a radio consultant. Its someone who borrows your watch to tell you what time it is. In other words these selfprofessed experts were bringing nothing new to the table, just their own opinion. And because of that FM radio suffered (and still does). Fortunately, the artists themselves werent listening to the consultants so-called expertise and instead just went ahead and made music, and from the end of the seventies through the eighties and into today we have seen an explosion of great female artists. As the punk scene exploded and began to tear down the restrictions that traditional radio and record companies had imposed, women took that opportunity to power onto the scene and in a short period of two years, in America alone, a number of important bands fronted by female rockers emerged
38 | Country Review August/September 2011

that radio could no longer ignore. These included Martha Davis & The Motels, Debbie Harry & Blondie, Pat Benatar, Chrissy Hynde & The Pretenders, Terri Nunn & Berlin and Dale Bozzio & Missing Persons. Within months, their music was all over the airwaves of new wave stations like KROQ and 91X and their videos were played around the clock on that brand new cable channel MTV. All of a sudden those expert consultants had to rethink their position on women making music. Now two of those great female rockers are coming to Temecula to show audiences once again how they were and still are able to make such great, powerful and fun music. On August 20th, Missing Persons, fronted by the legendary Dale Bozzio, comes to Monte De Oro for a close and personal concert. Missing Persons, in addition to all their hits: Mental Hopscotch, Destination Unknown, I Like Boys, Words, Give and Walking In LA have a storied history. It was none other than Frank Zappa who helped put the band together and get them a recording contract. As lead singer Dale Bozzio says, When Frank Zappa calls and says you should be making records you dont argue with him. In Franks studio the bands talent became quickly apparent; from Dales singing through

to Terrys incredible drumming and Warrens virtuoso guitar playing (he actually became a member of Duran Duran for over a decade) the band was ready to explode onto the scene. And thats exactly what they did, making hit after hit including topping KROQs year end countdown in 1981 with their #1 smash Mental Hopscotch. Onstage it was Dales striking good looks (she was a former Playboy bunny) and outrageous outfits that caught the crowds attention. Today she is often considered as a major influence on the way Lady Gaga dresses. If you werent fortunate enough to have caught Missing Persons ground breaking live shows back in the day at the Hollywood Palladium, New Yorks Roseland Ballroom, Perkins Palace in Pasadena or in front of 250,000 people at the US Festival then now is your chance to see them live when Dale Bozzio brings all the hits to Monte De Oro on August 20th. And if Missing Persons alone werent enough, also on the same bill is the fun party band that scored with a number of infectious chart toppers back in the 80s that are still played today on the radio and featured in numerous movies and commercials, The Romantics. So dont miss that great double bill and be prepared to sing along with Talking In Your Sleep and dance with What I Like About You. Itll be a fun night of great music! On September 23rd , just over a month after Missing Persons and The Romantics rock the Temecula Valley, Wiens Family Cellars presents a great 80s festival roll that also features a charismatic and oh-so-influential female performer, Martha Davis of The Motels. Martha is one of the great singer/ songwriters of our time and virtually took up residence on the national charts with her singles and albums from the late 70s through the 1980s. Her songs such as Total Control, Danger, Only The Lonely, Mission of Mercy, Take the L (Out of Lover), Remember The Nights and Suddenly Last Summer have become classics. Ive known Martha for many years and she never ceases to amaze me with her music and onstage presence. Plus, she is always writing - sometimes even in her sleep!! She told me that Suddenly Last Summer came to her in a dream the whole song, melody and all!!! As soon as she woke up she jotted it down because she thought it might be something. Thats an understatement. Suddenly Last Summer went on to become one of the most played love songs of the decade. Its a track that never fails to get the audience singing along when Martha performs it in concert. Its not just The Motels playing at the 80s Festival at Wiens. Also on the bill are the always fun Naked Eyes from Bath, England. Front man Pete Byrne loves to play all of their hits live and often jumps off the stage and comes down into the audience to serenade his fans with his voice and guitar. Many times, though, hes drowned out by the crowd singing back to him because they know all the words of his songs so well, hits like Always Something There To Remind Me, When The Lights Go Out and Promises, Promises which actually featured

a young singer from New York on backing vocals - her name? Madonna! The festival also features the charismatic Michael Aston and his band Gene Loves Jezebel. GLJ brings the rock side to the 80s festival with driving dance hits like Desire (Come & Get It), Gorgeous, Heartache, Jealous and The Motion Of Love. Michaels energy on stage recalls Jim Morrison of The Doors as he gets the audience involved with his music, and up and dancing to the beat. When he talks on the microphone his strong Welsh accent makes him sound like a younger, betterlooking Tom Jones. This show is a must for all the fans of great 80s music. Ill be there also, DJing and playing songs between the bands and introducing all three of the great acts as they hit the stage. If you used to listen to me on KROQ or tune in today to my show on Sirius XMs First Wave Ch 33, then you know what a fun concert this is going to be. Now when you think of the Temecula Valley youll know that its not just fine wine, amazing weather and world-class golf but also a terrific destination for some of the biggest bands to have come out of the 80s. A great concert under the stars featuring all your favorite music, what could be better?
Richard Blade can be heard every day on Sirius XMs First Wave Ch 33. Richard is also available for private parties and weddings. www.richardblade.com

around the HOUSE

KEEP WEEDS UNDER WRAPS FOR A LUSH LAWN

ontrol unwanted foliage to keep your lawn looking beautiful Im not entirely sure how it came to pass, but it would seem that having a lush, green lawn says something about a homeowner and his or her castle. Admit it, at some point in time, you have had lawn envy! Surely youve driven past a neighbors home, wondering how they got their grass to look so good. Is it some special seed blend? A secret fertilizing plan? While the neighbors may have a few tricks up their sleeves, that cant stop you from getting a lawn that is deep green, lush and long-lasting. But, to do this, youll have to get rid of those pesky weeds. Weeds really detract from the look of the lawn, but theres hope if you treat them properly. First, give the lawn a good raking and pull out any dead patches or excess build up of thatch. Treat your lawn with Ortho Weed-B-Gone Lawn Weed Killer (Ace no. 7102908 for 1-pint concentrate). This product will eliminate many of the most common problem weeds, including clover, chickweed, oxalis and itll even do a pretty good job on ol Creeping Charlie or ground ivy (these are the same thing). This product is rain-resistant in just hours and it wont harm the lawn. Keep in mind, you will get a little grass kill by using the Weed-B-Gone, but once the weeds are taken care of, you can loosen up the soil and reseed the area. Then watch your lawn thicken up and look great! Often times, really tough weeds get into the cracks in sidewalks, driveways and patios. If you need to tackle these and there is no surrounding vegetation (like grass you want to keep or a flower bed), its best to use a total vegetation killer such as RoundUp Season Long Grass & Weed Killer (Ace no. 7136104 for a 1.33-gallon ready-to-use container). Many Ace stores are also carrying a new product called Concern (Ace no. 7116320 for a 32-ounce spray bottle), a fast-acting non-selective weed killer that uses a soap blend to kill nearly all weeds in just hours. Whats more, Concern targets plant tissues and doesnt move through the soil, so nearby vegetation is pretty safe. You can replant after about two days. Important tip: All of the aforementioned products should be used with caution. Be sure you read all labels, adhere to all applicable safety precautions and use the products as they are intended to be used.

Once youve got your lawn weed issue under control, start up your four-step fertilization plan and bring your lawn to life. Before long, the neighbors will be wondering how you do it!

Visit your Neighborhood Ace Hardware store.. Get in. Get help. Get on with your life.

BACK TO SCHOOL WHERE?
Assuming your child goes to private school, who pays the tuition? Adding tuition for private schooling as additional child support is discretionary. Courts can be receptive to such a request, especially if the child was already attending private school or otherwise has special education needs. However, the key issue is whether the order is consistent with a parents ability to pay if not, then the proponent of private school could find themselves footing the bill. As a practical matter for many families, there simply is not enough money to enable both parties and their children to continue at the marital standard of living post-divorce, and nonessential private schooling may have to be sacrificed. There are specific factors that most courts will look for when deciding this issue and you are strongly encouraged to seek legal advice if you are faced with this circumstance.

s summer ends, I am often faced with two divorced parents who cannot agree on which school to send their child. The typical debate is in regard to which school district. Other times the question is whether or not the child should attend private school and, if so, who should pay the tuition. Generally, courts will not interfere with a parents decision to send children to public school, private school, parochial school, etc. or, instead, to provide home schooling. However, when two divorced parents cannot agree on which school their children should attend, the Court has the discretion to step in and make a decision. In California, the right to select a childs school is one of the rights included in the bundle of rights called legal custody. In other words, the parent, or parents, who have legal custody make the decision. In California, there is a presumption that legal custody will be joint that is, shared by both parents and both will have a say in which school a child goes to. This presumption can be overcome, for example, if one parent can show that domestic abuse has occurred, or if one parent can show that joint legal custody is not in the best interests of the child. However, most of the time, legal custody is awarded jointly to both parents.

have two water slides and kids splash pads onsite for guests of the resorts timeshare facilities. The water slides at Welk are absolutely popular with our guests. The kids just love them, said Adriene Edwards, director of guest services. The slides are each about 140 feet long, are quite curvy and wind around the pool areas. The water sliders can really pick up speed on them. Hours are 11 AM to dusk. For more information, visit www.welkresorts.com/

SHORE PATROL

Dike Rock is a favorite of biology students, and the best tide pools are north of the dike itself because both starfish and octopi can often be found there in addition to those sea critters which become visible at the other La Jolla tide pools during what is called a minus low tide. Tides are the alternating rise and fall of the sea level due to the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. Many factors influence the tides, but there are basically two high and low tides a day. During the peak summer months, low tide occurs during the night on San Diegos beaches, and the minus tides during daylight hours dont occur until the fall and winter, usually beginning in October. The best time to visit the tide pools is when minus tides occur very low tides that are below the average. A 1.0-foot tide or lower is okay, but you will have a better chance of seeing more marine plants and animals when the tide is minus. Its important to remember that while tide pools are wonderful discovery zones, they are also fragile ecosystems, and its best to follow some simple rules of conservation:

1. Avoid stepping on any animals 2. Return all animals to the tide pools exactly as you found them 3. Do not remove any attached life forms such as sea anemones and barnacles 4. If you examine any rocks, remember to carefully return them as you found them 5. Do not take any sea life or artifacts from the tide pools To be safe, be sure to wear sturdy, non-slip shoes because rocks can be sharp and algae can be very slippery. And watch young children carefully so that they dont injure themselves or the inhabitants of the tide pools. After all, those remarkable little creatures of the sea need to have every chance at hanging tough until the tide turns in their favor again.

OVER THE TOP

(from page 18)

Knapp, is the midnight black 1953 Cadillac El Dorado. That was the first year that the car was issued, and production was limited to 532 cars. President Dwight D. Eisenhower rode in the first-off-the-production-line Eldorado in the motorcade for his inauguration on January 20, 1953. Produced in an era of conspicuous consumption, Deer Parks Eldorado has won the Concours dElegances Best in Class every time it is entered in auto shows, he added. Although the cars are the stars at the museum, it also houses some impressive made-in-America collections of antique and vintage radios, televisions, motorcycles, bicycles, garage equipment and laundry and household appliances. There is also a nice display of Coca-Cola-related items, possibly the largest collection of neon dealership signs in the country glowing throughout the three buildings on the premises, and a whole room devoted to Barbie dolls of various vintages. People are astonished by the cars and by all collections here at the museum, said Phil Petraglia, family member-turnedenthusiatic docent at Deer Park. There is a lot of Americana here, and it reminds people just how much we used to manufacture in this country.

If all that wandering through memorabilia from Americas heyday of industrial chutzpah gets a little exhausting, take the time to sit back in the winerys tasting room and enjoy some of Deer Parks merlot, Sangiovese and petite sirah wines. Tastings are $8 for five tastings, or free with the purchase of a bottle of wine. An uncle who was a winemaker in Napa Valley got the winery started here on the premises around the same time the museum first opened its doors to the public, said Petraglia, adding the small winery usually puts out 1,000 cases per year. Our winery is one of the three oldest wineries in this area of San Diego County. But whether you are a wine lover, a hard top fan or a soft top devotee, Deer Park Winery and Museums amazing collection of American convertible beauties is more than just a gathering of road kings. Its also a heady and somewhat nostalgic reminder of an era when the future looked as expansive as the open road ahead.
Deer Park Winery and Museum, located at 29013 Champagne Blvd., Escondido, is open 10 a.m.5 p.m., Fri.-Sun, for summer hours, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat. & Sun. for winter hours. General admission is $8 and senior citizens (55 and older) admission is $7. Call 760-749-1666 for more information.

ENCORE

Breakout talent Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real (POTR), will be making their fifth return performance to Wine Country Temecula on Friday August 19th. With a distinctive sound and production, POTR brings a unique, high-energy show wherever they perform. Nelson says, Our name, Promise of the Real, comes from trying to do it the real way. Thats what my goal in life is - to stay human, stay real, stay humble, and stay grounded for the rest of my life. Nelson is on lead guitar and vocals, and the tunes parlay back and forth between renditions of Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young songs and original music created by POTR that can be found on their self-titled album, released in the winter of 2010. The band is picking up steam, and touring across the country as their fan base expands and embraces the raw talent this group exudes. POTR will be headlining the Rockin Blues and Folk Festival on August 19 at Wiens Family Cellars in Temecula. Also performing will be Artwork Jamal (Blues Vocalist of the Year 2010) and Northern Californias most popular folk band, Poor Mans Poison. A portion of the proceeds from the show go to support the Temecula Valley Foundation for Excellence in Education.
