MATH 221 Calculus and Analytic Geometry Spring 2011 Discussion Session 301

Prerequisite : Basically, you should be familiar with concepts covered in MATH 114. Specically speaking, it is expected for you to know basic algebra(polynomial computation, solving 2nd order equation and inequality, computing exponent, radical and absolute value) function (graph and properties of exp, log, trig function) and geometry (line, circle, graph). In the discussion session, we will review them if time permits. However, if you are not familiar with them, you should set a own time to review them. Otherwise, it will have a bad inuence on your scores of all exams and quizzes. 7. Text Book : Thomas Calculus, 12th edition, with 2nd-order dierential equations. (Be careful about the version!). 8. Grading : 1st Midterm Exam - 100 points 2nd Midterm Exam - 100 points Final Exam - 200 points Discussion Session (Quiz) - 100 points Your points earned will be the higher of (1) 1st Midterm + 2nd Midterm + Final Exam + Quizzes (2) Highest Midterm + 1/2 Final Exam + Final Exam + Quizzes 9. Quizzes : The entire list of homework problems have been posted in the Learn@UW and discussion webpage. Note that homework will not be collected. But, if you are comfortable with that homework problems, then you will be well-prepared for quizzes and exams. Every Thursday except exam weeks, there will be a quiz. We will take 12 quizzes in this semester. Please remember that there is no makeup quizzes in any cases. Make sure that your lowest two quiz scores will be dropped in the nal score computation. 10. Schedule : We will follow the course schedule.
