ABSTRACT

THE CORRELATION OF LEARNING STYLE AND LATERALIZATION CEREBRAL FUNCTIONS WITH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN THE 2NDYEAR OF MEDICAL STUDENT IN RIAU UNIVERSITY
By : Arief Aji Subakti Learning style is a preference of individual in percepting information by using his/her special senses. The current most common was according to VAK type, which would divide learning style into visual, auditory, and kinesthetic style. Each hemisphere had special function differently. Combination of both hemisphere in learning more easier than one hemisphere in course learning. Understanding learning style and lateralization cerebral functions was needed by student in order to have an effective study. Information about students learning style and their lateralization cerebral functions was very essential to aim the main goal as medical student base on academic achievement. This research was a cross sectional and analyzed correlation of learning style and cerebral lateralization with grade point average (GPA) of medical students. The subject was 2nd year medical student of Riau University that registered as an active student during the research conducted. The samples were 117 medical students and asked to answer the questionnaire, then from their answers would be classified into a spesific learning style and lateralization cerebral functions. This research obtained that students were 39,3% visual, 27,4% auditory, 33,3% kinesthetic, 71,8% left hemisphere lateralization, and 28,2% right hemisphere lateralization. There was significant correlation between VAK learning style and GPA (p<0.05), and there was significant correlation between lateralization cerebral functions and GPA (p<0.05). Key word : learning style, lateralization cerebral functions, and GPA.
