ABSTRACT

The English-Spanish/Spanish-English equivalent translations of scientific and management terms (jargon) commonly used in the field of natural resource management are presented. The glossary is useful in improving communications and fostering understanding between Spanish- and English-s~eakingPersons.

In addition, the s p e c i a l i z e d meanings of s c i e n t i f i c j a r g o n a r e l o s t when t r a n s l a t e d i n t o t e r m s w i t h s o c i a l o g i c a l c o n n o t a t i o n . Q u i t e o f t e n a g i v e n t e r m may h a v e d i f f e r e n t meanings t o a f o r e s t e r , s o i l s c i e n t i s t o r w i l d l i f e manager. I n o r d e r f o r a l i s t e n e r t o r e c e i v e a c l e a r u n d e r s t a n d i n g of t h e problem being d i s c u s s e d , t h e t r a n s l a t o r needs t o b e f a m i l i a r w i t h t h e s c i e n t i f i c terminology relevant t o the specialized topics. The t e x t i s u s e d within a p a r t i c u l a r d i s c i p l i n e . arranged a l p h a b e t i c a l l y within s e c t i o n s beginning w i t h t h e E n g l i s h o r S p a n i s h keyword, f o l l o w e d b y the equivalent translation.
I t i s u n d e r s t o o d t h a t some p e r s o n s may d i s a g r e e w i t h some t e r m s d u e t o t h e i r u s a g e o f other similar jargon, but a t l e a s t they w i l l be a w a r e o f i t s u s e i n o t h e r r e g i o n s and disciplines.
