(Clipper)

Clippers:

1
Clipper is an AC application of diode. The Clipper clips off a portion of the
input signal waveform without distorting the remaining part of the alternating
waveform. We can use different type of alternating waveforms as input such
as sinusoidal, Triangular, square etc. There are different types of clippers e.g.
series clipper, parallel clipper etc.

Some of the circuits and the characteristics of clippers are as follows:

Circuit Transfer characteristics Waveform of input and output

Design of a Clipper:

Let Vdc = 0v

2
When Vi > 0.7v Diode is ON Hence Output Vo = 0.7v

When we change Vdc value the Output Vo is shifted

Output Voltage is calculated by relation Vdc = A – 0.7
(Where A = peak value of ac source)

Experimental Circuit of a Clipper:

The Circuit considered is as follows:

When Vdc = 1v the Input and Output Waveform will be as follows:

Circuit With Reverse Diode:

3
When Vdc = 1.4v Input and Output Waveform will be as follows :

Parallel Circuit:

When Vdc = 3.8v Input and Output Waveform will be as follows :

4
Application:
1. To limit Voltage.
2. To create specific type of signals
