What is Physical
Topology
It is the Physical layout of devices on the network. The
way that the devices are connected to the network through
the actual cables, the physical structure of the network is
called the Physical topology.

These are the types of Physical Topologies:

 Bus Topology

 Ring Topology

 Star Topology

 Mesh Topology

 Cellular Topology
Bus Topology
Topology in which all nodes, i.e.
devices, are connected together by a Backbone Drop
single bus. Cables

Advantage: Disadvantage:
 Easy to implement  Limited number of stations
 Breakage of Backbone
 Good for temporary
 Low security
networks
 Cheapest Topology

 Requires less

cables
A

Ring Topology E
B
Topology in which every node has
exactly two branches connected to it. D C

Advantage: Disadvantage:
 Quick Data Transfer  Data transmission through

 Transmission is multiple node

relatively simple  Failure of any one node

 Cable faults are easily cause healthy damage

identified  Difficult to install &

reconfigure
Star Topology
Topology in which peripheral nodes
are connected to a central node Drop
Cables
which is called ‘Hub’.
Advantage: Disadvantage:
 Easy to implement  Failure of the central node
 Good for temporary
 Cable Length
networks
 Number of stations
 Failure of a Client

 Centre of a Star helps

finding fault
 Easy to modify and
adding new devices
Mesh Topology
Topology in which there are at
least two nodes with two
or more paths between them.

Advantage: Disadvantage:
 Extremely fault  Difficult to install

tolerant & reliable  Difficult to

 Provides reconfigure as True Mesh

guaranteed number of devices increases

capacity.  True Mesh is difficult to
troubleshoot and isolate fault
Cellular Topology
This Topology combines wireless point-
to-point and multipoint strategies to
divide a geographic area into cells.

Advantage: Disadvantage:
 Easy to Install  If Hub fails all devices
 Easy to add new affected
device  Antenna placement
 Fault isolation is

easy
