Editor’s Desk
For this edition, our main focus has been
on the placements. While all of us third
years' are consumed in preparing
resumes, comparing companies and
their packages, and of course, getting
the formal wear ironed, I take a few
moments from all the madness to
retrospect…
That's when it hits me… Whoa! We're in
the third year now, worrying about
career and MBA. When did this happen?
When did we cross the line from
careless banter to serious
conversations about sustaining in jobs?
Our greatest worry was not meeting the
minimum attendance requirement, or
having to miss a movie because there
happened to be a test coinciding with the
show timing! And all the apprehension
we felt on our first day at college could
not have been two years ago…surely, it
wasn't THAT far back?
We are always told that time flies and I
could not feel it more strongly than at this
moment. Yes, time changes. And with it
change our attitudes, our outlook and
perspectives, and most importantly, our
relationships. As I look around at the
people with whom I have made this
journey through a very important phase
in our lives,have spent virtually every
minute of the three years with, I cannot
help but feel a sense of pride at how far
we have come and how much we have
changed, for the better. With this sense
of pride comes a feeling of gratitude
towards our Alma Mater and its
foundation- our teachers, for having
given us so much- knowledge, affection,
and three years of unforgettable
memories.

feel sad on leaving behind this

this one quote somewhere
in this article!!
So….putting aside my
idiosyncrasies….I get onto
cover one of the most
extensive & one of my
personal fav topics ' Rock
through the Ages'.
Rock, a popular form of
music, emerged mainly in
the 1950s in USA. Over the
decades though, it has had a
widespread reach, &
become an international
cultural phenomenon. Rock
has evolved into a multitude
of varying styles having
highly justifiable popularity.
It began as a modest enough
genre of music, dominated
mainly by African Americans-
Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley. By
the mid 50s it began gaining
importance with the entry of
artists who were to define the
ROCK THROUGH THE AGES
History of Rock- Elvis “The
King” Presley with his 'Blue
Suede Shoes', 'Love me
Tender', “Thank you…thank
you very much” & “Elvis has
left the building” , Buddy
Holly & Johnny Cash.
1960s USA witnessed the
emergence of 'Surf Rock'-
major artists being the
Surfaris & The Beach Boys,
complete with their white
trousers & candy striped
shirts (!!)….crooning
'California Dreaming'. Their
hits made them stars in the
USA & other countries, but
their status was challenged
by a group emerging in
Britain- The Beatles, defined
by John Lennon & his
omnipresent sunglasses, (at
the risk of sounding too
girly)- Paul McCartney with
his cherubic schoolboy
looks, weird hairstyles, 'Love
me do', 'I want to hold your
hand' & an entourage of girls
screaming, crying & fainting
at their very sight! Bob Dylan
infused his bit, voicing the
anti- war sentiments of the
people with 'Blowin' in the
Wind' and 'The times they
are a-changing'. Towards the
end of the 60s a new subtype
of rock was emerging-
'Psychedelic'- the gods of
which were undoubtedly
Pink Floyd. Another jewel of
a band which begs to be
mentioned is 'The Doors'
which though composed
some great music, survived
for only a few years, losing its
position & charm with the
death of its frontman Jim
Morrison(All HAIL Jimmy
boi!!) in 1971.
Gawwwwwdddd…..this
decade just REFUSES to
come to an end!!!
At the turn of the decade,
more Brit bands started
gaining popularity, giving
birth to more guitar driven
acts & heavy metal- Led
Zeppelin, Cream, Animals,
Deep Purple, Black Sabbath
& the like.
Alongside, another form, the
Disco, was flourishing, the
kings of which were 'The Bee
Gees' whose music for the
movie 'Saturday Night Fever'
marked the pinnacle of this
era. Other associated names
were Queen, The Rolling
Stones, Rod Stewart….et al.
In the late 1970s, Australia
jumped onto the bandwagon
of rock & gave rock one of its
most amazing bands (yes I'm
biased!) till date 'INXS'
though it just isn't the same
without Michael Hutchence.
Rock diversified in the 80s-
hard rock, glam metal &
instrumental- Van Halen,
Queen, Bruce Springsteen,
AC/DC, Motley Crue,
Aerosmith, Def Leppard &
one of the biggest bands till
date, U2, ushered in an era
of widely popular, high
energy rock…..And then
came Guns & Roses,
undoubtedly the most
popular & famous band of
this era with its infamous
'Appetite for Destruction'
(Pun intended)! Instrumental
rock became popular like
music greats like Joe
Satriani, Steve Vai & Eric
Johnson spearheading this
sub genre.
The 90s saw the rise of the
grunge form- most famous of
which, of course, was
Nirvan, crooning….Well,
Whatever, NEVERMIND!
Other bands like Pearl Jam,
Alice in Chains,
Soundgarden ruled the rock
scene in USA. Britain
launched a 60s revival with
its Britpop- Suede, Oasis,
Radiohead, The Verve,
taking inspiration from Floyd,
REM & the likes. Mid 90s
saw alternative rock, with
bands like GreenDay, RHCP,
Foo Fighters, Creed, Blink
182, Rage Against the
Machine & Alanis Morissette
ruling the rock scene. Nu-
metal as a sub genre was
also beginning to take
precedence- KoRn, Linkin
Park, Disturbed, Deftones.
Of the 2000s gen- rock sadly
looks to be on a decline, with
pop, R&B & Hip Hop artists
taking precedence in the
USA. The definition of 2000s
rock though, undoubtedly is

undermining the contribution
of the other band members!
The influence of rock has
been widespread, changing
societies' attitudes towards
fashion, sex & sexuality, &
use of drugs & alcohol.
So…after imparting much

dislikes and attitudes of the students
towards the canteen.

The first day when I entered the
college canteen, I clearly remember
that we had our first informal
orientation session (read ra**ing) in
the canteen, which was a hub of
activity when we were in the first
year. I think nobody can forget the
hustle bustle, the fight for places to sit
and the start of break,
When I look back now, the
discussions over tea or Maggi
seemed to last for ever… covering
every topic under the sun. Or
sometimes, you could just sit there
quiet, and enjoy the daily special
(usually chhole chawal). In the
canteen, you discovered college
students you never would have
talked to in the building.
But that canteen is no more. We have
a soulless enclosure with empty
refrigerators, empty vessels and
consequently, empty chairs. The
reasons are many… The
organization in charge of the canteen
does not have a regular situation
analysis of the functioning issues.
Further, the process for change in the
canteen management is a slow and
complicated on. But change is
inevitable, and I can see, through the
haze of the time to come, the canteen
abuzz with activity… people eating ,
talking, laughing…enjoying! Maybe
one day we'll see that come true. And
as i walk out finishing this article,
forgetting to pay, the canteen woman
shouts behind me - “Some change is
due!!!”.

Though I was academically
very strong and used to be a

more of a consensus builder
than a controversial person.

students. I was not much into

organization can succeed

and definitely possess
analytical skills which is the
first step to any innovation.

member, “I myself belong to
an agricultural background,
in the sense that I own
agricultural land in my name.
Yet I'd like to say, that
agricultural income should
be taxed, being that the
government, in the form of
subsidized fertilizers is
already supporting the
farmers, seeds, loans etc. It
is mostly the political system
in our country due to which
the politicians disallow such
taxes to increase their vote
banks.”

“Yes, it should be taxed, but
with a proper tax slab like
income tax…as most of the
people in the agricultural
sector are below the poverty
line. Also the slab should be
mutually beneficial to both
academics and the
percentage score in
shaping one's career?
I shall be wrong if I say that
they are not at all important.
15 minutes of interview may
not be sufficient to judge the
intellect of the candidate and
therefore the academic
performance does provide an
indication of the capabilities
and personality of the
candidate. The importance of
academics however does not
go very far once one starts
working.
They are however far less
important than the mental
attitude one builds up by
experimenting with various
facets of life which help in
building overall personality.
The success in career
thereafter is totally dependent
on one's understanding of the
attitudinal skills required to
produce results in the
profession selected and
ensuring delivery.
In the present job market,
what are the job prospects
for fresh management
graduates?
Extremely promising. With
the increasing globalization
and resultant competition in
all the fields, the importance
of professional management
has increased tremendously.
There is already a dearth of
talent being felt in the market
and the organizations are
willing to go to any extent to
pick up professionals who
possess management skills
and can take decisions.
As per your experience,
what would you

starting work, many students
are not able to rejoin college
later.

institutes and the students I
have met, my impression is
that the students are
confident and there are
homogenous groups with a
strong feeling of
belongingness. What is
required is the marketing of
the institute to the corporate
world. You all must take it as a
task and create that
a w a r e n e s s . S e c o n d l y,
remember that you are better
than many post graduate
management institutes and
should therefore position
yourself accordingly.
