Undergraduate Course: Mobile Communications

1. Students in a class are divided into groups, each group has about 10 people. 2. Each group can select one of the following path loss models: 2.1. Theoretical model assumes propagation over a flat reflecting surface (the earth) as shown in Equation (2.227) in the textbook. A group selecting this model should compare results with the simplest model in equation (2.224) in Section 5. 2.2. Okumura and Hatas model in equation (2.228) in Section 5.1.1. 2.3. Lees model in Equation (2.237) in Section 5.1.2. 2.4. COST231-Hata model in equation (2.238) in Section 5.2.1. 2.5. COST231-WALFISH-IKEGAMI model in Section 5.2.2. 3. Each group should prepare a report including, but not limited to: 3.1. Specific tasks of each group member. 3.2. Detailed explanations/formulations of the used path loss model. 3.3. Numerical results of the used path loss model under several scenarios: 3.3.1. Path loss versus distance d (between BS and MS) under different carrier frequencies, BS/MS heights and wireless propagation conditions (e.g., urban, rural, open areas,) 3.3.2. Path loss versus carrier frequency under different distance (between BS and MS), BS/MS heights and wireless propagation conditions (e.g., urban, rural, open areas,) 3.3.3. Path loss versus BS/MS height under different distance d (between BS and MS), carrier frequencies, and wireless propagation conditions (e.g., urban, rural, open areas,) 3.4. Discussions/comparisons related to the numerical results. 3.5. Matlab codes for plotting the numerical results. 3.6. Concluding remarks of the report (e.g., comparisons with other groups results). 4. Report submission deadline: October 18, 2010 5. Each group is required to make a presentation of their report in class room. Presentation date is: October 20, 2010. 6. Main textbook used: Gordon L.
