C. V. Raman Global University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India

Course code: CSE23305 Year 2023
Assignment – 2.1
Course Instructor: Mohammad Ishtiyaq Qureshi
Text book: Data Communications and Networking: Behrouz A. Forouzan, Tata McGraw-Hill, 4th/5th Edition

Instructions: Please ensure to submit the assignment in two formats – a hard copy (hand written) and
a scanned PDF version. Kindly consolidate all pages into a single PDF file and upload it to the following
Google Form link: https://forms.gle/Cnz6KB53Ap2eg2z6A.
The submission deadline for the online form is 28th September 2023. Additionally, please note that the
physical copy should be handed in during the subsequent class after the aforementioned online form
deadline.

Questions/Problems (all are mandatory):

1. Which characteristics of an analog signal are changed to represent the digital signal in
each of the following digital-to-analog conversions?
a. ASK
b. FSK
c. PSK
d. QAM
2. Calculate the baud rate for the given bit rate is 2000 bps, and the type of modulation is
FSK.
3. Draw the constellation diagram for 8-QAM with two different peak amplitude values,
1 and 3, and four different phases.
4. What is the required bandwidth for FSK with 2𝛥𝑓 = 4 KHz if we need to send 4000
bps? Let 𝑑 = 1.
5. A cable company uses one of the cable TV channels (with a bandwidth of 6 MHz) to
provide digital communication for each resident. What is the available data rate for each
resident if the company uses a 64-QAM technique?
6. From your textbook, write 6 advantages and 3 disadvantages of using fiber optic cables.
7. Write a paragraph about infrared type of unguided medium. Also, mention applications
of infrared type of medium.
8. What is the function of the twisting in twisted-pair cable?
9. Using Figure 7.6 (from the textbook, 5th ed), tabulate the attenuation (in dB) of a 18-
gauge UTP for the indicated frequencies and distances.

10. If the power at the beginning of a 1 Km 18-gauge UTP is 200 mw, what is the power at
the end for frequencies 1 KHz, 10 KHz, and 100 KHz? Use the results of above
problem.
11. The horizontal axes in Figures 7.6 and 7.9 (textbook, 5th ed) represent frequencies. The
horizontal axis in Figure 7.16 represents wavelength. Can you explain the reason? If
the propagation speed in an optical fiber is 2× 108 m, can you change the units in the
horizontal axis to frequency? Should the vertical-axis units be changed too? Should the
curve be changed too?
12. Give the reason for attenuation of signal around 1380 nm wavelength in fiber optic
cable. Explain what happen, in terms of attenuation, if the light signal travels in a fiber
optic cable at 1550 nm wavelength.
13. Explain the differences between single mode and multimode fiber optic cable with
diagram.
14. The section of the electromagnetic spectrum defined as radio waves and microwaves is
divided into eight ranges, called bands, each regulated by government authorities.
These bands are rated from very low frequency (VLF) to extremely high frequency
(EHF). Explain each band in tabular form with their applications.
