Report / Assignment No. (1)

• The DSB spectrum (including suppressed carrier and AM) has two sidebands: the USB and the LSB,
both containing complete information about the baseband signal m(t). As a result, for a baseband signal
m(t) with bandwidth B Hz, DSB modulations require twice the radio-frequency bandwidth to transmit.
To improve the spectral efficiency of amplitude modulation, there exist three basic schemes to either
utilize or remove this 100% spectral redundancy:
1. Single Sideband (SSB) Modulation.
2. Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM).
3. Vestigial Sideband (VSB) Modulation.

Figure 1 (a) Original message spectrum and (b) the redundant bandwidth consumption in DSB modulations.

• Explain the three modulation techniques in three separate chapters. Your explanation should include
the following points for each of them:
1. Theoretical background.
2. The generation and detection process including (the formulas and the block diagrams).
3. The advantages and disadvantages.
4. At least one example including the spectrum analysis of generation and detection process.
5. Explain at least one application.
• For any bandwidth-efficient amplitude modulations (SSB, QAM, and VSB), using MATLAB software
program,
1. Design of the modulator and demodulator.
2. The simulation results should include the waveform and spectrum at the modulator and
demodulator output assuming the tone modulation case.
Important notes that must be adhered to before starting to prepare the report:
• Two students can do a joint report.
• It is possible to use scientific references and websites with the necessity to mention the references used
in preparing the project (At the very least, you should seek the help of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank
and the IEEE( .
• The report should be well coordinated.

• You must upload the MATLAB m-file after it has been completed in the designated place on the E-
learning Moodle.
• The file must be named with student name and section number (for example: Mohamed Abdelhamed
Abdelhamed-Sec. (1)).

Please Attention:
• Failure to comply with any of the above important notes will expose you to losing scores.
• I hope all students to depend on themselves to explain this report with their educational resources
available on the Internet and not to make any transfer attempts from their colleagues.
• If there are similar reports, these students will be evaluated with a zero score for them.
