EXPERIMENT IV Fiber Optic Transmission System

I. End Result To understand the characteristic of fiber optic transmission system developed using light transmitter, fiber optic transmission media, and light detector as the receiver. II. Scope A. Theory Transmitter and receiver are important parts in the transmission system using fiber optic. First the input signal will pass a driver to activate the light transmitter according with the determined input signal. Then light will be transmitted via fiber optic to the receiver. Receiver then will detect the light and transform it into the digital signal. The process of the transmission can be shown as the following diagram.

Instruction of Laboratory A. Procedure 1. Connect the module to the transmitter and receiver computers by using serial cables. 2. Turn on the transmission module. 3. Choose a red led as the transmitter and a photodiode as the receiver, then connect them by using a 1m fiber cable. 4. Run hyperterminal program (MSCOM) on both of the computers. 5. Type any text on the transmitter PC and make sure that the other PC received the text correctly. 6. Then place the end of the fiber optics a little bit loosen from the red led and the photodiode, so that the red led and the photodiode have some spaces before the fiber optics. 7. Retype some text in the program, then check whether the other PC receive the text or not.

B. Final Reports requirement for minimum grade 1. Why do we need to use a level converter on this experiment? 2. Why do we use HyperTerminal? Can we use the other program? 3. What is the purpose of using a light transmitter and receiver? 4. In this experiment, can the computers communicate in 2 ways? Why?
