Topic: Assessing organizational culture of a organization/ company I. Introduction.

Established in 1895, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is non-profit organization (NGO) with the mission to save wildlife and wild places around the globe. The organization was started with the successful helping the American bison recover on the Western Plains. Besides conservation work in five parks in New York City, WCS now is managing about 500 conservation projects in more than 60 countries including Vietnam. WCS protects the nature through science, global conservation, education and the management of the world's largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo. Together these activities change attitudes towards nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in harmony. WCS accumulates the power of the global conservation work to create the worlds most comprehensive conservation organization. WCS operates many country programs; therefore, the organization sets up many branches in different coordinating countries. It is understandable that each WCSs branch has different style of management and culture. This paper will focus on assessing the organizational of Vietnam WCS. Understanding the organizational culture of a large organization such as WCS is very important because it partly reflects the integrated consensus within the organization, the level of completing the mission and the effectiveness of the global conservation activities. Therefore, evaluating and measuring the organizational culture can help WCS recognize its strengths and weaknesses, and then adjust to enhance its organizational culture. Combining the collected data from survey, interview and observation with applying the Denison model, the research is conducted with the aim to suggest WCS toward the better organizational culture.

II. Literature review In assessing the organizational culture of WCS, the Denison model is used to summarize the organizational strengths and weaknesses and provide suggested actions to improve the operational performance. Denison Model is research result of Dr. Daniel Denison, formerly of the University of Michigan Business School. The Model link between organizational culture and performance measures such as return on investment, sales growth, innovation and employees satisfaction. The Denison model measures for critical traits of culture and leadership including mission, adaptability, involvement and consistency. The following graph is the Denison model.

The model splits into hemispheres: Internal/ External and Stable/ Flexible. External hemispheres includes adaptability and mission. It can be interpreted that a organization with a strong external focus would adapt and change in response to the external environment. A strong external focus impacts revenue, sales growth and market share. Internal hemisphere includes involvement and consistency. An organization with a strong internal focus has the dynamics of the internal integration of systems,

structures, and processes. It pays attention to employees, quality of product and customers. Flexible hemisphere includes adaptability and involvement: A flexible organization has the capability to change in response to the environment. Its focus is on its customers and its people. A flexible organization connects higher levels of product with service innovation, creativity, and a fast response to the changing needs of customers and employees. Stable hemisphere includes mission and consistency: A stable organization has the capacity to remain focused and predictable over time. A stable organization is typically linked to high return on assets, investments and sales growth, as well as strong business operations. With the Denison model, the correlation between the organizational effectiveness measures will be determined in the Wildlife Conservation Society.
