Cultural Courthouse for Bessemer

Elie Franklin Caylee Griner

Jack McWaters

We integrated aspects of traditional courthouses with modern forms. The classical components, such as columns, shoulders, and front steps, aid in identifying the purpose of our building while the modern attributes, the sky boxes, accentuated front porch, and angled mullions, address new styles of architecture. The sky boxes, glazed facade, and skylight help the courthouse utilize as much natural light as possible while still keeping direct sunlight at a minimum. The use of steel throughout the building and representative wide ange and trusses, aid in linking the courthouse to the heritage of Bessemer.
