nouns and modify the nouns in a way that they either generalize or particularize the nouns. There are two kinds of articles: the idefinite article a or an which is generally used with a singular countable noun,and the definite article the which may be used with singular or plural nouns. The indefinite article a or an is used : 1) For give meaning of one,any to singular countable noun. Example : Tell me a story. I want to read a book. 2) With singular names of a profession,trade,or class. Example : He is a teacher. She is a student. He is an engineer. 3) In a lot of other fixed expression/idioms which you may acquire as you encounter them in the course of study. Example : It is a shame. It is a pity.

The indefinite article the is used : 1) When the noun is an identified one,that is when we believe that the hearer knows which person,thing,or place the noun refers to.the considered to be identified when : The noun has been mentioned befor. Example : He gave me a pen.The pen is blue. The noun is followed by a phrase describing the noun. Example : The book on the desk is mine.

Example :

The noun is understood from the situation or when it is the only thing in the place or area.

Open the door,said budi. 2) With names of countries,name of some rivers,names of ocean,names of musical instruments. Example : The Indonesia the Singapore the England the Nile the Mississippi the guitar the violin the Atlantic The definite article the is not used with an uncountable noun or a countable noun plural used in general sense. Example : Coffee comes from Indonesia. Men are stronger than women.
