Steel Structures Design 1 STR N302

Mid-Term Exam

Senior - 1 Fall Semester December, 2009

Notes: TIME ALL: 1.5 Hours CLOSED BOOK Exam (Only STEEL TABLES ARE ALLOWED). Data not given should be reasonably assumed. All steel sections used are St. 37-2 The steel skeleton of an industrial building is composed of a series of frames spaced AB/CDEF/GHIJ, as shown on Fig.1. The building is 66m long, and is composed of a main hall 20m wide and a work area 10m wide. Spacing between frames is 6m. The main hall is provided with an overhead crane of capacity 40ton. The roof cover for the main hall is 8cm R.C slab, while the roof for the work area is corrugated sheet having intensity 15 kg/m2. The weight of the steel structure for the building may be assumed 40 Kg/m2 of covered area. The building roof is considered inaccessible. 1. Calculate the applied load P1 at joint J due to dead and live loads. Live load is to be taken according to ECP. (15 %) 2. If the forces in members (I) and (II) due to different loads acting on the building are as given in table below, find the design force for the two members.
