Principle Determination of the electrolytic conductivity, generally called conductometric analysis, has been used for approx. 130 years. Conductometric analysis is the measurement of the alternating current conductivity of solutions. It is a nonspecific method. For qualitative results other techniques are required (e.g. ion chromatography - retention time of pure standards). The electrolytic conductivity is a sum parameter, resulting from the individual conductivities of the ions in the solution. The conductivity is a function of the concentration, which is linear within certain concentration ranges. The ion mobility, which determines the alternating current conductivity, depends on type of ion (size and hydration), the polarity of the solvent, the temperature and the viscosity. Direct conductometric concentration measurements can be made using inexpensive equipment in salt solutions or pure acids and bases. The main application of the conductometric analysis is the determination of an end point in volumetric analysis. The method is also widely used to check the total electrolyte content of water.
