Mastering the basics of compositional movement and making a unified theme in painting Painting multiple objects and two or more texture differences Using a fourth more intense color as a glaze color* Show single compositional plane break with brightly colored cloth (*vermillion or ultramarine blue) Use thumbnails to explore compositional possibilities Use small poster board sketch to explore color Palette: Light Red, yellow ochre, ivory black, vermillion or ultramarine blue depending on choice below. Possible replacements for colors above: transparent oxide red or burnt sienna (for light red), transparent oxide yellow or raw sienna for yellow ochre, Winsor and Newtown blue black or Gamblin chromatic black for ivory black. Note: whatever red, yellow and blue you start with these must be kept consistent throughout the painting process. Size: depends on the objects and your arrangement. This will be determined by a preliminary study. Set in a shadow box with clear light and shadow on a neutral dark brown, black or dark grey (#6-10) cloth and background.

Show the effect of light by modeling multiple textures, colors and forms and showing what the color does as the form turns. Learn how to mix, layer and use the colors and organize the palette. Objects in still life: 1) Single white porcelain or reflective object, vase, cup bowl, pitcher etc. without decorative patterning. 2) Earth colored object (ochre, khaki, wood colored). Wood box, wooden kitchen spoon, cutting board, wood plank, brown eggs. 3) Single flowing cloth no bigger than a yard in any direction. Pick either a vermillion colored cloth or ultramarine blue.

Use color test chart to check to see if the cloth youve picked is appropriate for glazing. Old Holland Vermilion on left, Ultramarine blue on right.
